Eagles Take a Split at Bates, 8-2, 2-10

LEWISTON, Maine - The Husson University softball team (17-9) split this afternoon's doubleheader at Bates College after both teams brought big bats in the first inning of each game to jump ahead. The Eagles took game one by a score of 8-2 over the Bobcats before falling in game two, 10-2. 

GAME ONE: HUSSON 8, Bates 2 

Husson got off to a quick start in today's doubleheader as Jen Jones blasted a two-run homer to give herself and her team a 2-0 lead. Following up with a two-run single by Tamara Aunchman, the Eagles built their lead in the first inning, making it a 4-0 game. 

After three scoreless innings, Aunchman stepped up to the plate, roping a double to drive in another two runs, giving them a 6-0 lead. 

Husson held Bates scoreless through four innings before Julia Panepinto singled to right field allowing two base runners to cross the plate, making it a 6-2 ball game. Husson didn't wait long to add a few insurance runs late in the game to give them an 8-2 victory over Bates in game one of today's doubleheader.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE:

Jen Jones pitched a complete seven innings for Husson for her eighth win of the season. She only allowed two runs to socre, walked just one batter, and stuck out another one.  

Payton Bruxton pitched a complete game for Bates, allowing 11 hits while walking three batters and string out two.  

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Tamara Aunchman went 3-4 on the day with a double and four RBI.
  • Olivia Smith hit 2-3 with three runs scored.
  • Whitney Bess batted 2-4 with two runs scored.
  • Jen Jones was 1-3 with a HR, she scored two runs of her own while tacking on three RBI.  

OFF THE BAT - BATES:

  • Janell Sato was 1-1 on the game with a run scored. 
  • Emily Samar also went 1-1 for the Bobcats.
  • Julia Panepinto batted 2-3 with two RBI.

 

GAME TWO: BATES 10, HUSSON 2

The Bobcats were assertive on offensive in game two, pulling in six runs in the first inning to make the score an even 6-0 until the third inning when Whitney Bess led off the top of the third inning with a bunt single as she sprinted down the baseline to beat out the throw.  She worked her way around the bases and scored the first run as Morgan Coleman drove a single to right field, tacking on one more run against the Bobcats, 6-2. 

Husson's comeback from behind was lacking as Bates added another four runs to their lead to provide an eight-run deficit following the conclusion of the fifth inning to put an end to the doubleheader.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE:

Alyssa Prest, Jillian Blake, and Jen Jones all combined to pitch five innings for the Eagles, giving up a total of nine earned runs on ten hits, while walking two and striking out four. 

Kirsten Pelletier pitched a complete five innings, giving up six hits, and allowing two runs. She walked one batter and struck out five.

  • Emily Samar batted 2-3 with a double, two RBI and one run scored.
  • Aleah Pagan went 2-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
  • Erin Murphy was 1-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

The Eagles head into their final stretch of the season when they take on UMaine-Presque Isle in a doubleheader at home tomorrow on Wednesday, April 24th. The first game starts at 3:00 p.m.
