Softball Completes Weekend Vermont Road Trip Sweep by Taking Two from NVU-Lyndon

LYNDONVILLE, Vt. - The Husson University (16-8, 7-1 NAC) softball team swept their second consecutive North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader in the State of Vermont. The Eagles won game one by a score of 19-3 in five innings and the night cap, 20-0 (five innings), over the Hornets Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (2-16, 0-6) at Skip Pound Field on Friday afternoon.

GAME ONE – HUSSON 19, NORTHERN VERMONT-LYNDON 3 in Five Innings

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Eagles jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI single by Tamara Aunchman, an RBI groundout by Alyssa Prest, a Hornet miscue and Meagan Gosselin's first intercollegiate extra base hit, an RBI double to right centerfield. The Hornets responded quickly scoring two in the bottom half of the first off, an RBI single by Emma Corey and a Cassandra Black sacrifice fly.

Husson extended their lead to six with four runs in the top of the second before Amber Roberts crossed the plate when Madeline DeGroot singled to right field in the bottom of the second. The Eagles tacked on one run in the third and ten in the fourth for the 19-3 victory.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE:

Alyssa Prest improved to 3-1 on the season after throwing three innings, yielding three runs (two earned) off six hits with a career high seven punch-outs in the victory. Lexi Cunningham made her intercollegiate debut inside the circle pitching two scoreless innings, while striking out three.

Emma Moore (1-4) took the loss after allowing 19 runs (16 earned) off 15 hits with six walks. Roberts pitched one inning of relief allowing just one hit.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Whitney Bess went a perfect 4-4 on the day with three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.
  • Olivia Smith finished the game with a 3-3 day with six RBI, a home run, a double, three runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Smith becomes just the second Eagle in program history to record two six or more RBI games (six RBI vs. Finlandia - March 11) in one season and the first since Husson Sports Hall of Famer Lori Yanush '95 did so in the 1994 season.
  • Kylie Kennedy was 2-4 with a home run, a career-high three runs scored, a career-high five RBI.
  • Katie Walker was 2-3 with a double - her first intercollegiate extra base hit - two runs scored and three RBI.

OFF THE BAT - LYNDON:

  • Cecilia Chamul went 1-2 with a triple and a run scored.
  • Corey finished 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
  • DeGroot was 1-3 with an RBI.

GAME TWO – HUSSON 20, NORTHERN VERMONT-LYNDON 0 in Five Innings

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Eagles picked up right where they left off from game one, scoring nine runs in the first off two RBI singles by Katie Windsor, RBI singles by Gosselin and Bess, and two extra base hits by Jen Jones, a two-run double and two-run home run before adding ten in the third and one in the fourth for the 20-0 victory.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE:

Jones tossed her 13th career shutout and 37th career complete game, passing Kayla Merrill '16 for the most shutouts and Alannah Healy '17 for the most complete games by any pitcher in program history since Husson joined the NCAA in 2004. The junior captain allowed just two hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. She also became the program's all-time NCAA Era career leader in innings pitched when she tossed her 343rd career inning in the night cap's final inning.

Roberts (1-9) took the loss for the Hornets after allowing 18 hits, 20 runs (eight earned) with four walks and three punch outs in five innings.

OFF THE BAT - HUSSON:

  • Bess went 3-5 with three runs scored, three RBI and a triple.
  • Windsor was 4-5 with four runs scored and three RBI
  • Jones finished 2-3 with two runs scored, a double, a home run, a walk and four RBI.
  • Morgan Coleman was 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
  • Gosselin had a 2-4 day with two runs scored and two RBI.

OFF THE BAT - LYNDON:

  • Meghan Campo went a perfect 2-2.

The Eagles continue their road trip when they travel to Lewiston, Maine for a non-conference doubleheader at Bates College on Tuesday, April 23rd. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
