Women's Lacrosse Picks Up First Win of the Season Against UMF, 11-7

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - Husson Women's lacrosse grabbed their first win of the season defeating the University of Maine at Farmington in their season opener on Boucher Field. Freshman Mary Cushing led the path to victory with five goals and an assist for the Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Husson opened the scoring 35 seconds into the game via Mary Cushing to set the tone of the game early. Husson's second goal came at the 25:34 mark, from Cali Newton's stick after Husson successfully cleared the ball from their defensive zone.

Neither team scored over the following eight minutes until the Beavers and Eagles began trading goals, with Farmington cutting into the deficit through Isabella Monique from a man-up advantage with 17:07. Cushing responded with her second goal of the game at 14:04 to put the Eagles back up two with a score of 3-1. Kaya Backman would add a second for the Beavers, but Husson's Riana Winslow would capitalize on a free position opportunity shortly after. A few goals later, Cushing capped off the half with a hat trick to separate the Eagles, 6-3, going into the break.

The Beavers scored three unanswered to open the second half, with the first coming from another man-up advantage, this time being converted by Amber Bell. Nicole Schofield and Keilly Lynch would both capitalize on free position attempts to tie the game at sixes with 19:45 left to play.

A flurry of Husson attack saw the Eagles retaliate with five-straight of their own. A pair of goals from Jordyn Labrie and Cushing, along with an extra security point from Maddy Olsen, would be enough to see the Beavers off. Lynch finished out her hat trick with under three minutes remaining before the final whistle was blown and the Eagles grabbed the 11-7 victory.
