Nighthawks Outlast Men's Soccer, 1-0

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Eagles (2-5-1) nearly took Newbury College (4-2-1) into overtime, but the Nighthawks found the back of the net just minutes before the final buzzer for 90 minutes of regulation went off. Husson men's soccer fell, 1-0 in a non-conference match at Boucher Field on a drizzly Wednesday night.

THE SCOOP:

The lone goal of the contest came in the 87th minute as a Rony Morales corner connected with the head of Ryan Gonzales finding the bottom right corner of the net, giving Morales the assist.

The Eagles had some extremely close scoring opportunities throughout the contest, including Rod Ghanayem blasting a volley off the crossbar and Jahmal Williams rocketing a shot off the post. Unfortunately, no further opportunities came from the live ball ricocheting off the frame of the net.

The Nighthawks were awarded a penalty kick in the 28th minute. Alberta Baraka approached the ball aiming for the bottom right corner, but Kyle Townsend once again shut down his third penalty kick of the season. Not only did he make the first stop, but he continued to scramble up and make yet another save off the rebound.

Remarks by Head Coach Gavin Penny, "It's getting harder and harder to talk about our games. I thought we had played well today and had better chances. But if you don't take those chances and give away stupid free kicks, the ball will end up in our box and they might knick one. That's pretty much what happened this evening. We need to learn from these lessons, we can't continue to just think we were unlucky and move on. It's unfortunate, but a harsh reality. I'm hoping the lads will take some time to watch back clips of plays that have cost us games and work hard to correct them."

BETWEEN THE POSTS:

Townsend recorded four saves for the Eagles including his outstanding penalty kick save, while Samuel Quinones stopped seven shots for the Nighthawks.

TEAM STATS:

Husson outshot Newbury, 15-11, while also having the opportunity to take five corner kicks to Newbury's four.

UP NEXT!

The next game for men's soccer is on Saturday, September 22nd as the Eagles host UMaine-Farmington in their first North Atlantic Conference game at Boucher Field with kickoff scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
