Softball Forces Game 7 By Beating New England College, 9-1

BANGOR, Maine- The #1 Husson University softball team (20-13) beat #2 New England College (17-22) by the final score of 9-1 in Game 6 of the NAC Softball Tournament at O'Keefe Field on the campus of Husson University on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened:

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning and Chloe Gorey (Scarborough, Maine) hit an RBI-single to score Paige Veilleux-Adams (Winslow, Maine) as Gorey advanced on the throw. Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine) followed that up with an RBI-double to score Gorey.

The Eagles extended the lead in the top of the fourth inning as Kylie Kennedy (Hermon, Maine) hit a 3-run home run just over the left field fence to score Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine), Kasey Poligni (North Berwick, Maine), and herself and give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.

The Eagles added two runs in the top of the fifth as Smith hit a single as Gorey scored on a fielding error. Tamara Aunchman (Panton, Vt.) followed that up with an RBI-double to score Smith and make it 7-0.

Pilgrims score their first run of the game in the bottom of the sixth as Yesenia Dominguez (Symlar, Calif.) beat the throw home on the wild pitch to cut the Eagles' lead to 7-1.

The green and gold responded in the top of the seventh as Morgan Coleman with an RBI-double to score Smith. Casey Heath continued the scoring with a sacrifice fly to score Coleman and make it 9-1.

  • Smith with four hits, two runs scored, and an RBI.

  • Aunchman with two hits and an RBI.

  • Kennedy with a home run, 3 RBI and two hits.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) (W, 15-7) pitched a complete game, allowed one run on three hits, struck out nine, and walked one.

  • Dominguez scored a run.

  • Destiny Helmedach (Middlefield, Conn.) with a hit.

Pitchers: New England College

  • Taylor Barbour (Bay Shore N.Y.) (L, 12-11) pitched four innings, allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, struck out four, and walked one.

  • Emily Farone (Sandown, N.H) pitched two innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

  • Katie Mathews (Harrison Township, Mich.) pitched an inning.

Husson and New England College will face off in a winner-take-all championship game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
