Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with Bowdoin, 7-4, 1-10

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Husson University Softball Team (11-8) split a non-conference doubleheader with Bowdoin College (18-6), by the final scores of 7-4 and 1-10 at the campus of Colby College on Sunday afternoon.

Game 1: Husson 7, Bowdoin 4

How it Happened:

The Eagles started off the scoring in the sixth inning as Morgan Coleman (Acton, Maine) lined an RBI-single to left field to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Madelyn Fowler (East Barre, Vt.)  scored on the throw to make it 2-0 Eagles. Kylie Cunningham (Bangor, Maine) made it 3-0 with a ground ball to the shortstop to score Kasey Poligni (North Berwick, Maine).

The Polar Bears scored their only runs of game one in the bottom half of the inning as Allison Rutz (Essex Junction, Vt.)  hit a 2-run RBI-double into left field to cut the lead to 3-. The Polar Bears took the lead as Maddie Rouhana (Falmouth, Maine) hit a 2-run HR to make it 4-3 Bowdoin.

Eagles regained the lead in the 7th inning for good as Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine) hit a 3-run homerun. The green and gold added the final run of the game as Cunningham hit a sacrifice fly to score Coleman, as the Eagles went on to win 7-4.

Batters: Husson

  • Smith with a 3-run home run.

  • Coleman and Cunningham each with two RBI.

  • Gorey with two runs scored and two hits.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jen Jones (W, 6-3) (Acton, Maine) pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking two.

Batters: Bowdoin

  • Rouhana with a 2-run homerun.

  • Rutz with three hits, two RBI, and a run scored.

  • Rice and McCarthy each with a hit and run scored.

Pitchers: Bowdoin

  • Kate Hoadley (L, 5-3) (Plaistow, N.H.) pitched seven innings and gave up seven runs on nine hits while striking out five and walking two.

Game 2: Bowdoin 10, Husson 1 (5 Innings)

How it Happened:

Bowdoin jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning as Rutz started off the scoring with an RBI-single to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead. Natalie Edwards (Pasadena, Calif.) recorded a 2-run RBI-single to center field to make it 3-0.

The Polar Bears extended the lead to 7-0 after the second inning as Lauren O'Shea (West Roxbury, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Emma Stevens (Napa, Calif.), then Jordan Gowdy (Weatogue, Conn.) scored on an error on the same play to make it 5-0. Caroline Rice (Santa Ana, Calif.) finished off the scoring as she cleared the bases on a 2-run homerun to make it 7-0.

The Polar Bears finished their scoring in the fourth inning as they added three more runs all thanks to back-to-back home runs by McCarthy (2-run homerun) and Rutz.

HU scored their only run of the game in the 5th inning as Bri Brochu (Pittston, Maine) hit a sacrifice fly to score Kendra Wilson (Salem, N.H.), but the Polar Bears went on to win 10-1.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jones (L, 6-4) pitched an inning and allowed seven runs on six hits while walking a batter.

  • Smith pitched three innings and allowed three runs on three hits while walking two and striking out one.

Batters: Bowdoin

  • Rice with a 2-run homerun.

  • McCarthy with a 2-run homerun.

  • Rutz with a homerun.

Pitchers: Bowdoin

  • Ruby Siltanen (W, 6-0) (Alameda, Calif.) pitched five innings and allowed a run on two hits while walking four and striking out three.

The Battle of Birds part two will take place on Wednesday, April 11th as the Eagles host the University of Maine Presque-Isle Owls on Boucher Field. First game will 3 PM and the second game follows up at 5 PM.
