Softball Splits Non-Conference Doubleheader with UMaine-Presque Isle, 2-0, 6-7

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University softball team (12-9) split a doubleheader with the University of Presque Isle Owls (10-8) by the final scores of 2-0 and 6-7 in non-conference battle of the birds action at John P. Boucher Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1: Husson 2, University of Maine at Presque Isle 0

How it Happened:

Eagles took the lead in the second inning when Tamara Aunchman (Panton, Vt.) hit a RBI double sending home Morgan Coleman (Acton, Maine).

Husson doubled the lead in the fourth inning off a RBI grounded out by Coleman scoring Olivia Smith (Calais, Maine).

Batters: Husson

  • Coleman finished with two hits, run scored, and a RBI.

  • Aunchman had a hit and a RBI.

  • Bri Brochu (Pittston, Maine) added two hits.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jen Jones (Acton, Maine) pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing five hits, and striking out seven to pick up the win.

Batters: University of Maine at Presque Isle

  • Brianna Losee (Pittsfield, Maine), Anaiz Diaz (Tampa, Fla.), and Emily Page (Lincoln, Maine) each had a hit.

Pitchers: University of Maine at Presque Isle

  • Sara Packard (St. Albans, Maine) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on six hits and struck out two.

Game 2: University of Maine at Presque Isle 7, Husson 6 (8-Innings)

How it Happened:

The Eagles scored four runs in the second inning as Kylie Kennedy (Hermon, Maine) hit a two-run triple to center field giving Husson a 2-0 lead. Brochu drove home Kennedy with a RBI-single making it 3-0 HU. Eagles finished off the scoring in the inning as Madelyn Fowler (East Barre, Vt.) hit a RBI single to centerfield to bring home a run extending the Eagle lead to 4-0.

Eagles continued to added to their lead in the third inning when Kendra Wilson (Salem, N.H.) hit a two-run double down the right field line for a 6-0 lead.

Owls add their first run of the game in the fourth inning as Packard struck out and reached first base on a wild pitch as Jordi Legassie (Presque Isle, Maine) scored to cut the Husson lead to 6-1.

Owls tied the game up in the seventh inning as it started off when Page hit a double to center field, bring home two runs before Legassie added two more runs with a RBI-double making it 6-5. Legassie, then, stole second as Roni Shaw (Payette, Ind.) scored to tying the game on a delayed double steal.

In the eighth inning, Packard scored the go ahead run off a fielder's choice by Brianna Losee giving UMPI the 7-6 lead and Packard retired the Eagles in order in the bottom of eighth for the victory.

Batters: Husson

  • Kennedy had a hit with two RBI.

  • Wilson finished with two RBI and two hits.

  • Brochu and Fowler each had two hits and a RBI.

Pitchers: Husson

  • Jones pitched eight innings, allowing five runs on seven hits with 11 punch-outs.

Batters: University of Maine at Presque Isle

  • Page had one hit with two RBI.

  • Legassie finished with two RBI, two hits, and a run scored.

Pitchers: University of Maine at Presque Isle  

  • Packard pitched five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) off eight hits with three punch-outs, while walking one.

  • Brookelynn Garcia (Torrance, Calif.) pitched three innings, allowing two hits, striking out two, and walking one.

The Eagles will start conference play on Saturday, April 14th as they host New England College in a doubleheader starting at 12 PM.
