Eagles Finish Out Regular Season with Sweep over Pilgrims

HENNIKER, N.H.—The Husson University softball team picked up a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) sweep over the Pilgrims of New England College on Sunday afternoon.

The victories boost Husson to 27-11 overall and 11-1 in NAC play, while NEC falls to 17-19 overall and 6-8 in league play.

GAME ONE: HUSSON 8, NEC 6

The Pilgrims manufactured an early lead in the bottom of the first as Brianna Castellano led off with a single, advanced to second in a single by Alexa Scribner, and scored from second on a sacrifice-fly by Christine McNeil, but the Eagles had a quick answer for NEC's lead.

NEC led 2-1 after two innings, but the Eagles put up a three-run third to take the lead for good. Husson led 8-2 entering the seventh inning before NEC rallied for a four-run seventh.

Castellano batted 3-for-4 from the leadoff slot, accounting for a fourth of NEC's 12 hits. Scribner was 2-for-4, while Debra Mazzeo finished 2-for-3.

Husson tallied 16 hits in the win. Bri Brochu had a team-best three hits, while Chloe Gorey, Arika Brochu, Kylie Kennedy, Nicole Andrade and Brianna Bires all had two hits apiece.

Jen Jones earned the win in the circle, pitching five innings in relief and scattering seven hits and four runs while striking out 14.

Mazzeo took the loss for NEC, scattering 12 hits, five runs, two walks and a strikeout over four innings.

GAME TWO: HUSSON 12, NEC 2 – SIX INNINGS

Husson's bats stayed hot in game two, as they tallied 14 hits to score 12 runs and take down the Pilgrims in a mere six innings. Bri Brochu had another three-hit game, while Gorey, Tamara Aunchman, Arika Brochu, and Andrade all had two hits each.

The Eagles set the tone with a five-run second inning. They would go up 7-0 in the top of the third before NEC answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Husson tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth, and added three in the sixth, including back-to-back homeruns by Arika Brochu and Olivia Maynard.

McNeil had two of NEC's six hits.

Gabriella Marcheschi took the loss, scattering five hits, five runs, two walks and a strikeout over 1.1 innings of work.

Arika Brochu earned the win, scattering six hits, two runs and six strikeouts over six innings.
