Box Score 2 LEWISTON, Maine - The Husson University softball team splits their non conference doubleheader with Bates at Lafayette Street Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Bates (10-13) took game one 3-2 and dropped game two 11-5 to Husson (24-10).
Game One: Bates 3, Husson 2
Bates got on the board first against Husson's starter Arika Brochu (4-4) in the bottom of the fourth.
Maddie Inlow singled to start the frame. Julia Treadwell followed with a drive that got dropped by the Husson center fielder. Inlow advanced to third and Treadwell ended up at second base on the play.
Tori Fitzgerald bunted her way aboard, driving in Inlow to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
In the fifth inning, Livie Gilbert singled to center leading off the inning and Kirsten Pelletier helped her own cause by doubling home Gilbert to extend the Bobcat lead to 2-0. Pelletier advanced to third on the throw home and she scored when Julia Panepinto reached on a fielder's choice. The Eagles' throw home on Panepinto's grounder was not in time to get Pelletier.
Husson rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Tamara Aunchman singled through the right side and pinch hitter Morgan Coleman followed with a single of her own. Two outs later, Nicole Andrade singled to load the bases.
Pinch hitter Olivia Maynard singled in two runners to trim the Bobcat lead to 3-2.
But Pelletier (6-7) got Briana Brochu to line out to Panepinto, clinching the win for Bates.
Pelletier struck out seven batters and allowed only two runs on five hits in the circle in the game one victory.
Inlow finished 2-3 with a run scored in the first half of the twin bill. Bates outhit Husson 6-5 in the victory.
Arika Brochu gets the loss for Husson, striking out two and giving up six hits and two earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Alannah Healy pitched in relief for the Eagles, striking out three batters and giving up no hits and runs in 2.1 innings.
Chloe Gorey, Tamara Aunchman, Morgan Coleman, Nicole Andrade and Olivia Maynard each had a hit for the Eagles in the setback.
Game Two: Husson 11, Bates 5
Briana Brochu singled to start the top of the first and Chloe Gorey reached on an error. One out later, Tamara Aunchman singled in Briana Brochu. Then with two away, Olivia Maynard and Kylie Kennedy each singled home a run to extend the Eagle lead to 3-0.
The Bobcats answered in their half of the frame. Andrea Russo drew a leadoff walk. After Panepinto reached on an error, Inlow went deep with a home run to left-center.
With the game tied at three, Husson grabbed the lead for good in the top of the third. With one out, Olivia Maynard singled and Kylie Kennedy drew a walk. A Bates error allowed a run to score, putting runners at second and third with one away. The Eagles got another run on a RBI grounder and Brochu added an RBI single to make the score 6-3 in favor of Husson.
The Bobcats cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the third. With one out, Panepinto singled, followed by a single by Inlow allowing Panepinto to advance to third and the throw to the bag got mishandled, allowing Panepinto to score and Inlow to advance all the way to third. Treadwell drove in Inlow with an RBI grounder, making the score 6-5.
The Eagles picked up an insurance run on a Tamara Aunchman home run in the fourth and never looked back. The Eagles added three more in the fifth and one in the sixth for the 11-5 victory.
Bobcat starting pitcher Sam Fellers went the distance, allowing only three earned runs on the afternoon in cloudy and cold conditions.
Jen Jones (6-4) earned the win inside the circle for Husson in relief of Alannah Healy who earned a no decision after allowing two earned runs off three hits with a walk and a punch-out in three innings. Jen Jones pitched four innings in relief allowing just two hits with eight strikeouts to extend her scoreless streak to 21.1 innings.
Olivia Maynard, Briana Brochu and Tamara Aunchman lead the Eagles' offense with three hits each, while Paige Veilleux-Adams had two hits. Briana Brochu, Tamara Aunchman, Olivia Maynard, Chloe Gorey, Kylie Kennedy and Nicole Andrade combined for eight RBI and Paige Veilleux-Adams added a double in the win.
The Eagles will continue thier road trip on Saturday at Castleton. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Bates is back in action Friday when they host Bowdoin at 4:00 p.m.
