Box Score 2 BANGOR, Maine - The Husson University softball team swept Johnson State, 8-0 and 8-2, in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Harold Alfond Diamond at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.
GAME 1: Husson 8, Johnson State 0 in Five Innings
Husson wasted no time to get on the scoreboard first, as the Eagles used three singles, a stolen base, two wild pitches and a groundout to take a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the first. Briana Brochu leadoff the inning with an infield single, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an infield single by Chloe Gorey. Chloe Gorey then came around to score on an Arika Brochu single to left field after advancing to third on a wild pitch and a groundout by Tamara Aunchman.
The Eagles tacked on a run in the bottom of the third when Kasey Poligni scored on an Arika Brochu double to left field before Husson (21-9, 6-0 NAC) erupted for five runs on five hits in fourth. Olivia Smith had a two-run scoring single and Tamara Aunchman had a two-run ground-rule double.
Arika Brochu retired the Badgers in order in the top of the fifth giving Husson the 8-0 win in Game 1 of the doubleheader.
Arika Brochu (4-4) threw five scoreless innings, allowing only a leadoff hit to Abby McRae, and struck out five.
Arika Brochu lead the Eagles' offense with three hits, while Tamara Aunchman and Briana Brochu each had two hits apiece. Olivia Smith, Tamara Aunchman and Arika Brochu combined for six RBI and Chloe Gorey chipped in one RBI in the win.
Kaitlynn Woodward (1-5) was tabbed with the loss. She went 4.0 innings, gave up eight runs (six earned), struck out two and walked two. Abby McRae had the only Johnson State (1-11, 0-4 NAC) hit in the Game 1 loss.
GAME 2: Husson 8, Johnson State 2
Johnson State broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth with two runs. Anna Bingham reached base with an infield single with one out to start the rally before advancing to second on a Kaitlynn Woodward ground out to second. With two outs, Hannah Leroux ripped a RBI single to center, allowing Anna Bingham to score, giving Johnson State a 1-0 lead. A fielding error by Chloe Gorey off a ground ball by Alannah Farley allowed Hannah Leroux to score the second Johnson State run forcing Husson's head coach Terren Allen to make a pitching change. Newly entered pitcher Jen Jones struck out Amanda Coulombe to end the Badger threat.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the fourth on a RBI single by Casey Lopes and a wild pitch allowing Nicole Andrade to score the game tying run before taking the lead for good in the fifth inning on a RBI double down the leftfield line by Arika Brochu and a sacrifice fly by Nicole Andrade as the Eagles led 4-2 after five.
Husson added insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Chloe Gorey, a sacrifice fly by Kylie Kennedy and two Badger miscues.
Husson held onto the 8-2 lead to sweep the doubleheader.
Alannah Healy started the game and went 3.2 innings. She allowed three hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out two. Jen Jones (5-4) picked up the win for the Eagles by going 3.1 innings, allowing no hits or runs, and striking out seven. Jones retired every batter she faced expect for one who reached on a hit-by-pitch.
Tamara Aunchman paced the Husson offense with two hits, while Brianna Bires, Casey Lopes, Arika Brochu, Olivia Smith, Chloe Gorey and Brianna Brochu each chipped in with one hit apiece in the win.
Hannah Leroux (0-4) picked up the loss by going six innings, giving up eight runs (six earned), and striking out one with seven walks. Anna Bingham, Hannah Leroux, and Alannah Farley all had one hit in the loss.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow for their final two regular season home games of 2017 versus Lyndon State at Harold Alfond Diamond starting at 12 p.m.
