Caballero and Doyon Power Men's Soccer Past Green Mountain, 4-1

Box Score

POULTNEY, Vt. – Miguel Caballero and Kevin Doyon each struck for a goal and an assist to push the Husson University men's soccer team past Green Mountain College, 4-1, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.

After both teams traded possession for the first several minutes, Husson (8-6-0, 5-3-0 NAC) organized their offensive front and converted on one of their opportunities in the 15th minute of action.

On a play down the right wing, Husson played a ball into the middle of the field. After two Green Mountain defenders failed to clear the ball, Alvaro Valls took advantage and struck a laser past the GMC goalkeeper.

Husson held the advantage in time of possession and was threatening in the hosts' final third several times in the opening frame, but GMC's defense held strong throughout the remainder of the period taking the teams into the break with Husson ahead 1-0.

Green Mountain seemed content with playing the defensive game in the early going of the second frame clearing the ball away from danger but not pushing ahead with a concerted offensive effort.

The strategy paid off in the early going, but in the 67th minute, Caballero found Kevin Doyon for Husson's second goal of the game.

Green Mountain seemed unfazed by the second score and worked hard to capitalize on one of their few prime scoring opportunities as Jordan Johnson lifted an arcing pass off of a free kick to Darren Golden who deftly sent in a streaking Brandon Bellissimo who rifled home a strike to close the deficit to 2-1.

Green Mountain was energized by the goal and worked to generate more scoring opportunities by pushing more players forward. Due to the tactic, however, Husson was able to counter attack and iced the game with a pair of late goals.

Cabellero and Saker Ghanayem scored just under three minutes apart to close out the scoring and clinch the win for the visitors.

Husson outshot GMC by a 33-10 margin while also holding the edge in corner kicks 9-0.

Cody Gross picked up the win in net for Husson by stopping three shots then was relieved by Kyle Townsend late in the game who did not register a save. Griffin Shelor took the loss for the hosts after making eight saves.

The Eagles travel to Castleton tomorrow, October 21, for a conference match-up.
