Eagles Lose Double Header to Rhode Island College, 11-3 11-6

Providence, R.I.— Husson University softball was swept by Rhode Island College in a non conference double header at he Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Husson (2-12) was led by senior shortstop Lyndsay Merrill (Bethel, ME) who went 4-for-7 with a double, a triple, three RBI and a pair of runs scored.

RIC (8-2) was led by Duvall, who went 3-for-6 with one triple, one home run, five  RBI and four runs scored, while sophomore second baseman Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) went 4-for-7 with one double, one triple, five RBI and four runs scored of her own.

The Anchorwomen took the lead in the bottom of the first in game one with Duvall and sophomore first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) knocking in an RBI each. The Eagles brought in three runs in the top of the third, which was keyed by a two-run RBI triple by Merrill to take a 3-2 lead.

RIC knotted the game in the bottom of the inning before racing ahead in the bottom half of the fourth. With no outs and runners on second and third, freshman shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) ripped a two-RBI triple to put the Anchorwomen ahead for good. A sacrifice fly by Venturini added one more insurance run to set the stage for Duvall's walk-off winner in the bottom of the fifth.

Venturini started the offensive outburst with a two-out single to center field. Duvall stepped to the plate with runners on second and third and two-down before she ripped a three-run homer to left field to walk off in a game that was shortened due to the 8-run rule.

Senior pitcher Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) (4-0) went all five innings, allowing three runs (all earned) and striking out four. Husson junior Alannah Healy (Brockton, MA) (2-6) went 4.2 innings, allowing 11 runs on 11 hits.

The Anchorwomen were in a much closer game in game two, with the Eagles holding a 4-2 advantage following two and a half innings. RIC was able to knot the game at four apiece in the bottom of the third with Venturini and Duvall each registering an RBI in the frame.

The Eagles were able to tack on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, but RIC answered with an RBI single by junior third baseman Mary Sweeny (Portsmouth, RI). Three fly-outs in the top of the seventh allowed the Anchorwomen to complete the sweep with an 11-6 victory in game two.

Husson is back in action on Saturday April 2 and 3 at 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. at Fisher. RIC will host Bridgewater State on Tuesday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m.
