Box Score MACHIAS, Maine - Leah Hibbad's golden goal in the 106th minute of double overtime lifted Husson to a 2-1 triumph over Maine-Machias on Tuesday evening at Machias Soccer Field. The goal was Hibbad's third in two seasons against the Clippers.
"We pulled out a great win tonight," Husson coach Amanda Cummings said. "The biggest difference was we controlled possession and tempo and finally capitalized in the end."
Husson (3-3-1) wins its fifth-straight match over Maine-Machias (6-2), which has been outscored 24-1 in that span. The Eagles are 11-4 all-time in the series.
The Clippers led 1-0 when Brooklynne Lewis (11) scored with only eight seconds left before halftime, but Alison Boulier (4) answered for the Eagles in the 71st minute with an assist from Kathryn McGinnis.
After a scoreless first overtime, Hibbad's (2) heroics in the 106th minute came on a shot from 30 yards out after a double pass from Boulier and Sydney Costa. Hibbad's 12th shot and Husson's 43rd in the match ended a three-game losing streak.
"Everyone was so happy and hugged me after it went in," Hibbad said of the team's elation after her game-winner. "It didn't feel real until my teammates swarmed me and picked me up. It was an amazing feeling, and we needed that confidence."
"I'm so happy for Leah and Allie," Cummings commented. "It relieves some pressure on them when they are finding the back of the net. We have more work to do on finishing, but the best part is we are starting to play Husson soccer the way it should be played."
The Eagles blitzed the Clippers in shot attempts 43-6 and held a 12-0 edge in corner kicks. Costa registered six shots, while Hannah Clough added five.
Maine-Machias, which entered Tuesday averaging 4.6 goals per game, was shut down for most of the night by goalkeeper Jordyn Hopkins (1-2), who only had to make two saves.
Netminder Aisling Farragher-Ge (6-2) made 14 saves in the loss.
Husson resumes NAC play Saturday at Colby-Sawyer (N.H.). Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
