Box Score BANGOR, ME – The Husson University men's soccer team fell in a heartbreaker to Gordon College by the score of 2-1 in overtime on Saturday evening at Boucher Field. Husson falls to 2-2-0 on the year while Gordon improves to 3-0-0. Gordon claimed the Third Annual Husson Challenge Cup while the Eagles took second.
Husson took the lead just two minutes into the contest when
Josh Bean (Ellsworth, ME) threw the ball in and
Phil Frost (Bangor, ME) made a nice sliding effort to put the ball in the back of the net.
The Eagles held the lead until the 56th minute when Caleb Cole knotted the game for Gordon.
Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) kept the game tied for the Eagles with six second half saves.
In extra time, Gordon's Joshua Cochran found Nathan Bilbie who was able to beat Potter to his left side with a low shot.
"I'm disappointed...we are so close to being very good but we just don't know it yet," said Husson head coach
Jeff Gettler. "In the second half they took over and we couldn't get it back. Once we know how good we are, we'll be a very good team."
Potter finished with eight saves and his record went to 2-2-0 while Josh Spoonhour made five saves to improve his record to 3-0 for Gordon.
Maine Maritime took third in the Husson Challenge Cup as they defeated Southern Maine 1-0. Gabriel Warren notched the game-winner in the sixth minute while Marshall Spear kept the Huskies off the board with a pair of saves.
Gordon's Bilbie was named the Husson Challenge Cup Most Valuable Player. Gordon's Andy Guthrie, Kristian Kasiguran and Caleb Cote were named to the All-Tournament Team. Also named All-Tournament were: Husson's Bean, Nic Pare (Keene, NH) and Michael Curtis (Ellsworth, ME); Maine Maritime's David Lord, Evan Turmenne and Gabriel Warren; and Southern Maine's Charles Mull and Tyler Rand.
Husson returns to the field on Wednesday when the Eagles host Colby at 7 p.m.
