Women's Soccer Falls in NAC Semifinals

Box Score

CASTLETON, VT – The Husson University women's soccer team fell to Castleton in the NAC Tournament semifinals by the score of 4-0 on Wednesday evening. Husson falls to 12-8 on the year while Castleton goes to 12-7-1.

In the opening minutes, Husson continually threatened in the final third, and in the ninth minute, they had their first scoring opportunity of the match when Desir'ee Hamler (Franklin, NJ) fired a shot off a rebound. However, Castleton's keeper, Jessica Binkowski, was able to stop the effort with a diving save.

With 37 minutes gone, the Spartans grabbed the first lead of the match after Carlson scored her ninth goal of the season. The freshman midfielder delivered a bending cross close to the near side post that deflected off the visitors keeper, Jess Poulin (Albion, ME), and into the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Just seconds later, the Eagles nearly grabbed an equalizer when Mollie Roy (Hermon, ME) rifled a shot from the near sideline that ricocheted off of the crossbar and was cleared from the box.

After the break, the Spartans wasted little time to double their lead after Wershoven found the back of the net for the fourth time this year in the 47th minute. Jenna Bostwick received the ball inside the box and tapped it onto a cutting Wershoven. The junior forward delivered a shot across the net that beat Poulin to make it 2-0 in favor of the home side.

The Spartans almost extended their lead to three just minutes later, but Erin Boulier (Bangor, ME) cleared Costello's header off the line to keep the Eagles deficit at two.

In the 77th minute, Castleton's attack was threatening again when Bostwick delivered a header from the far side of the six-yard line that was cleared from play after smashing off the top post.

The Spartans added a third goal in the 79th minute after Costello sent in a bending shot from 25-yards that flew into the back of the net to make the score 3-0.

Four minutes later, the junior midfielder netted her second goal of the match to push her season total 13 goals. After Wershoven was taken down in the box, Costello stepped up and took the penalty kick, firing a shot just inside of the far post to give the Spartans a four-goal lead.

"We let this game get away from us in the second half, but this result does not truly reflect who we are as a team or how much we've achieved this season," said Husson head coach Carly Gettler. "Our seniors, Dez, Jess and Bick, have poured so much of themselves into this program and have been inspirational leaders on the field for us, and I'm proud to have coached the three of them and all of the wonderful individuals who made up our team this fall."

Castleton outshot Husson 28-5. Jess Poulin (Albion, ME) made nine saves for Husson while Jessica Binkowski made three for Castleton.
