Box Score Castleton, VT - The Eagles took the Spartans to extra time but couldn't produce a winning goal, settling for a 1-1 tie against Castleton at Spartan Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In the first half, each team had opportunities go begging as the Eagles and Spartans played to a scoreless tie through the first frame.
In the final seconds of play in the first half, the Eagles got their best opportunity to go ahead. Freshman Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Houlton, ME) beat a defender with the dribble down the right flank and ripped a shot. Spartan goalkeeper Nate Koenemann made a sprawling save, keeping the shot out of the goal and preserving the tie into the break.
With just over 15 minutes remaining the Spartans took a 1-0 lead off a corner kick set piece. Spencer Dandurand tapped the ball into play where Bryce Kaler picked it up. The forward tapped it back to Dandurand who ran an overlap behind him. Dandurand crossed the ball to the back post where Smith finished it off with a header to put Castleton up a goal.
With 6:52 left in the game, Charles Bujambi (Democratic Republic of Congo) found the equalizer for the Eagles to level the score at 1-1. Joshua Bean (Ellsworth, ME) ripped a corner kick that Bujambi elevated and redirected into the net, past the hands of Koenemann. Neither team was able to find the net in the final seven minutes, and the tilt went into extra time.
The Eagles were unable to muster any successful offensive pressure in the overtime periods. Husson's Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) accumulated 10 saves in net in 110 minutes.
"We had a tremendous, fantastic result today at Castleton, where we tied 1-1. It was a very difficult game because we were away. They scored with about 16 minutes left, so with about 9 minutes left we pulled our back and put another striker in and forced our way down the field and with about 5 minutes left we scored to tie it up which was unbelievable to do in regulation," said Head Coach Jeff Gettler, "It was a fantastic performance, the team continues to show improvement, and we are still undefeated in the league."
With the draw, Husson moves to 2-4-3, 2-0-2, and will host Lyndon State next Saturday, October 5th in the first day of Homecoming 2013 at 3:30 PM.
