Husson Wins Battle of the Eagles

Box Score

POULTNEY, Vt. – Husson University received two second half goals while shutting out Green Mountain College 2-0 in men's soccer North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Eagle Game Field.

The two Eagles' squads played a conservative first half, dominated by midfield play.  Green Mountain (2-7-0, 1-1-0 NAC) held a slight advantage in shots outshooting Husson 6-5.  There were limited scoring chances for both teams as between them they totaled four shots on net.  GMC keeper Nate Laymon and Husson keeper Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) handled all shots easily ending the first half in scoreless tie.

Husson (2-4-2, 2-0-1 NAC) broke the scoreless tie when Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME) put home a deflected pass sent into the middle of the box which beat GMC's Laymon in the 50th minute of play. Joshua Bean (Ellsworth, ME) fed a through ball that sent Andy Stevick (Rockport, ME) in on the keeper.  He tipped the pass which went to Berenyi who fired home the strike.

The visitors added another goal in the 75th minute when Jimmy Fitzpatrick (Houlton, ME) crossed a ball into the box from the right wing for Cooper Antone (Hampden, ME) who made no mistake firing home a strike into the upper left corner of the net giving Husson a 2-0 lead.

Husson controlled play after the second goal making it difficult for Green Mountain to generate any momentum, but the home side nearly got on the scoreboard when David Sylvester lined a low-hard liner on goal.  Husson's Potter, however, made a nice save to keep the shutout intact.

Potter would indeed earn the victory and shutout for Husson making three saves, while Laymon made one save in the loss.

"It was a gritty performance, the guys did well. Potter earned the shut out with some tough saves. Overall in the second half we adapted to grass and the heat and pretty much took over," said Head Coach Jeff Gettler, "On both sides of ball in the second half we were very good. It was a good league win and hopefully tomorrow we will be playing for first place."

Green Mountain and Husson will get set for the back end of their respective NAC doubleheader weekend series. Both Eagles' squads will see action at noon as GMC will host Maine Maritime, while Husson travels to Castleton to take on the Spartans.
