Softball Flies By Green Mountain

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Poultney, VT - Husson University softball concluded an 8-0 week when it pounded out 10 extra base hits at the plate while only allowing four hits from the mound en route to a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader sweep of Green Mountain College on Sunday afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Park. Husson stands at 12-8 (6-0 NAC), while Green Mountain drops to 0-14 (0-6 NAC).

Husson put big numbers up on the scoreboard in the first, second and fourth innings (11, 10, and 9 runs) of the opening game as the offense backed Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) and Emily Staples (Caribou, ME) on the mound.

The Husson offense exploded for 11 runs in the first off GMC pitcher Amber Heath and never looked back as the visitors cruised to a 31-0 shutout. Husson received multiple big games from Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME), Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME), and Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) in the opener. Sargent doubled and singled in her six at bats and scored and drove in three runs. Merrill and Schultz both socked home runs, with Schultz's blast being a grand slam giving her four RBI and three runs in the contest. Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) also homered for the visitors in the win, and Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH) recorded a team-high four runs.

Kris Belessis and Heath were the only players to record a hit for the home side as both singled and walked in their plate appearances.

Game Two continued to follow a similar theme as Husson scored at least three runs in each inning as it rolled to an 18-2 win making a winner out of K. Merrill, who tossed a complete game two-hitter, striking out eight.

Lyndsey Merrill (Bethel, ME), Mallory Conary (Warren, ME) and K. Merrill each recorded three RBI days at the dish with Lyndsey slugging two doubles. Schultz scored four runs for Husson, while Breanna Martin (Oxford, ME) and Kelsey Livermore (Kennebunk, ME) each added three runs scored.

Amber Heath scored both of Green Mountain's runs, while Casey McGill drove in both with a triple. Chelsea Paul was in the circle for GMC and pitched a complete game in defeat for the home squad.

Green Mountain will be back in action on Tuesday, April 9 when the team hosts New England College for an NAC doubleheader. Husson will continue its road trip with a visit to the University of New England for an April 10 doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
