Softball Splits with Bowdoin

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Brunswick, ME – Husson softball split a Sunday doubleheader at Bowdoin on Sunday. The Polar Bears had collected 13 straight wins, including a 12-5 victory in the opener, before dropping to Husson 5-0 in the second game of today's twinbill. Bowdoin concludes the weekend with a 24-10 record. The Husson Eagles sit at 25-10-1 (15-1 North Atlantic Conference).

Game 1: Bowdoin 12, Husson 5

Julia Geaumont pitched three 1-2-3 innings to opening the game for Bowdoin, as the offense supplied six runs for an early lead. Toni DaCampo singled and came around to score on a double by Gen Barlow. With Bowdoin runners filling the bases, the team tacked on a second run off a wild pitch. In the following inning, back to back singles by Siena Mitman and Hanna Wurgaft combined with a DaCampo walk to load the bases. Barlow ripped a bases clearing triple down the left field line. Dimitria Spathakis scored Bowdoin's lone run in the third off an RBI single by Mitman.

Husson finally broke through in the top of the fourth with a pair of singles. A sacrifice bunt by Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) moved both runners into scoring position, allowing Sami Schultz to drive in a runner for Husson's first run. Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) followed up with an RBI single to center, as the Eagles trailed 6-2. Bowdoin answered right back with a lead off homerun to dead center by Toni DaCampo. The Polar Bears continued to add runs, including a Casey Correa RBI double later in the inning. Husson followed up with a three run fifth, with runs by Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, MA), Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME), and Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH), but was unable to close the gap any further.

Game 2: Bowdoin 0, Husson 5

Game two opened with five scoreless innings before Husson ended the stalemate with three runs in the sixth. With runners on second and third, Kelsey Livermore (Kennebunk, ME) picked up an RBI single. Lyndsey Merrill (Bethel, ME) knocked in both base runners to up the Eagle's lead to 3-0.

Bowdoin struggled to find their offensive pace set in the previous game, and managed only one hit off of Husson's Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME). The Eagles added a pair of insurance runs from Spiers and Courtney Hill (Calais, ME) in the top of the seventh.

With Husson leading 5-0, Bowdoin looked to rally in their last at bat. Barlow and Gately each hit long fly balls to the warning track, which were ultimately snagged by the outfielders as the Eagles took the game two victory.

Husson secured the top seed in the North Atlantic Conference tournament and will host Johnson State on Tuesday, time TBD. Bowdoin will host the University of New England in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m on the same day.
