Husson Faces NEC: Drops One, Earns Shutout in Two

Henniker, NH – Husson University softball played New England College on the road on Friday afternoon and came away with a split to remain atop the North Atlantic Conference. New England College came from behind in the seventh inning to take game one 7-6 but fell to the Eagles 11-0 in game two.

With the split, Husson is now 22-9-1 overall and 13-1 in the NAC. The Pilgrims now stand at 17-15 overall and 13-3 in North Atlantic Conference play.

Game 1: NEC 7, Husson 6

In game one, the two teams would exchange runs in the opening inning before NEC would use a two run second to grab the early 3-1 lead. NEC's Alyssa Hoot (Waterville, OH) would open the second with a single and come around to score on an Elizabeth Harrigan (Weston, CT) double. Harrigan would later come around to score thanks to a single off the bat of Kiley Williams (Salem, UT).

Husson would knot the game at 3-3 scoring a single run in both the fourth and the sixth inning. Husson's run in the fourth would come off a two-out solo homerun over the centerfield fence by Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME). In the sixth inning Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) would open the inning with a walk and come around to score later in the inning thanks to a single to left field off the bat of Lyndsey Merrill (Bethel, ME).

The Pilgrims would battle back with two runs in the home half of the sixth inning, highlighted by a two-run double by Harrigan. Again, the Eagles would have an answer with three runs in the seventh thanks to a three-run homerun by Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) giving Husson the 6-5 lead heading into the home half of the seventh.

After the Eagles got the opening out of the inning, NEC's Taylor Belsito (Millbury, MA) would reach on a single up the middle. Husson would then get the second out on a groundout, but NEC's Rebecca Allen (East Patchogue, NY) would come through with the game-winning walk-off homerun over the centerfield fence lifting the Pilgrims to the 7-6 victory.

NEC's Rebecca Allen and Elizabeth Harrigan each finished game one with two hits, three runs batted in and a run scored.

Leading the way for Husson was Victoria Overlock who was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in for the Eagles.

Picking up the win on the mound for NEC was Olivia Stanley (Walpole, NH) who allowed six runs on eight hits and struck out two. 

Game 2: NEC 0, Husson 11

In game two, Husson pounded out 10 hits in an 11-0, five-inning shutout victory. Leading the way for Husson was Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) who was 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs batted in and a run scored.

Husson's Sami Schultz was 2-for-2 in game two with a double and Lyndsey Merrill drove in two runs with a single and scored twice. Heidi Shaw, Aimee Mortensen, Courtney Hill, Melissa Souza, and Victoria Overlock all had runs in the win, as well.

Picking up the win on the mound for Husson was Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) who allowed just two hits and struck out three in four innings of work.
