Softball Dominates Game 1; Plays to a Draw in Game 2

Biddeford, ME - Husson softball defeated non-conference opponent the University of New England Wednesday afternoon, 6-1 in game 1; UNE battled from behind, ending the second game of the doubleheader in a draw.

Game 1:

Deb Colpitts (Levant, ME) got the scoring started for the Eagles in the top of the 1st when she doubled to center field bringing in Kayla Merrill (Bethel, ME).

UNE countered back in the bottom of the 4th when Casey Brigham batted in a run to make it 1-1.

The Eagle offense came up big in the top of the 5th inning where they scored 5 runs, creating too much of a deficit for the Nor'easters to recover from.

Husson's Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) doubled to right center scoring Heidi Shaw (Manchester, ME) making it 2-1. K. Merrill reached on a fielder's choice batting in Sargent, who had advanced to third on a wild pitch. First year Sami Schultz (Hermon, ME) singled to right field bringing in Merrill, and senior Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) had 2 RBIs on a double to left center bringing in Allie Hill (Calais, ME) and Colpitts making it 6-1.

Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) pitched a solid 80-pitch, 6 innings giving up just one earned run, with 3 strikeouts. K. Merrill came in to pitch 1 inning, facing 5 batters, striking out 1.

Game 2:

UNE jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st causing Husson to fight from behind. In the top of the 3rd Kayla Merrill singled up the middle to score Lona Sargent to make it 3-1 UNE.

In the top of the 4th Kelsey Livermore (Kennebunk, ME) singled to center field, scoring Aimee Mortensen, advancing Victoria Overlock (Belfast, ME) to second base. Breanna Martin (Oxford, ME) came into pinch hit, singling up the center scoring Overlock to bring it to 3-3.

Keeping the scoring going, Sargent singled to center field, advancing to second on the throw, scoring Heidi Shaw and Haley Spiers (Rochester, NH). Sami Shultz singled up the middle to bring in two more runs scoring K. Merrill and Sargent making it 7-3.

In the bottom of the 5th the Nor'easters scored 4 runs to tie it up for good at 7-7.

Colpitts pitched 4.1 innings for the Eagles, Amanda Ryan came in for .2 innings, and K. Merrill pitched for 2 innings, walking 1 batter, and striking out 1.

The Eagles improve to 13-8-1(6-0 NAC) overall this season and will next host two North Atlantic Conference opponents; Lyndon State for a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 PM and Johnson State for a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:00 PM.
