Box Score Northfield, VT - Husson football lost on Saturday to the Cadets of Norwich University by a final of 28-23. Quarterback Joe Seccareccia was forced out of the game in the first half with an apparent injury, thrusting Ryan Stroud back into the quarterback position for the first time since week three of the season. Husson went up 17-7 in the third quarter before allowing the Cadets to score 21 unanswered points to take control of the game.
The Eagles running game played well on the afternoon scoring all three touchdowns by way of Ryan Dorso and Byron Jackson. Jackson led Husson in rushing, carrying the ball a season-high 28 times for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Dorso's number was called just four times, but made the most of it, running for 62 yards and a 32-yard touchdown, his longest on the afternoon.
Norwhich got on the scoreboard first on a Keyen Foley quarterback keeper from three yards out with 49 seconds left in the first to put the Cadets up 7-0 in their final regular season home game of 2013.
Shabashe McIntosh silenced the cannon just moments later returning the ensuing kickoff 83-yards to the Cadet five. On the first play from scrimmage Jackson took the handoff for the first Husson score tying the game 7-7.
Ryan Dorso scored his touchdown about five minutes into the third quarter as both teams went scoreless through the second frame. Dorso found a hole and scampered 32 yards for the score and Husson's 14th unanswered point along with the extra point by Dennis Meehan.
Meehan made it 17 straight for the Eagles, booting a 21-yard field goal exactly four minutes later to give Husson the 17-7 lead with 6:19 to go in the third. The four-play, one-yard drive was marred by two false start penalties, but was set up moments earlier on a fumble forced by Nelson Perez returned for 20 yards by Damian Shepard to the Cadet seven.
Norwich started its comeback soon thereafter, scoring just over a minute later on a J.D. Milan run from a yard out. The Cadets trailed now 17-14 with 4:54 to go in the third.
A minute and a half later, a botched snap forced Stroud to fumble and unintentionally boot the ball backwards allowing Bruce Mackey of Norwich to recover inside the red zone at the Husson 12.
Al Georgio scored the first of his two backbreaking touchdowns on the very next play to give the Cadets the lead, their first since the first quarter.
Norwich used an interception in the fourth quarter to set up Georgio's second TD. Georgio took the handoff on the first play for only three yards, but was handed the ball once again on the next play, bounced to the right through a hole and was all alone 85 yards for the score.
The Eagles added one more touchdown on their next drive. Stroud connected nicely with Ben Foss for 39 yards at the Cadet two. Foss had two catches on the day for a total of 52 yards as the Eagles only threw the ball three times. Jackson scored his second rushing touchdown on the next play to cap the six-play, 57-yard drive to pull within five at 28-23 after a failed two-point conversion.
Husson's Reece Attard came in to take the opening kickoff. Attard placed an onside kick perfectly to the left side of the field and the Eagles looked to have recovered, but did so out of bounds to give the ball to the Cadets. Norwich accumulated a first down from Georgio and proceeded into victory formation after Husson used its final two timeouts to run out the final 1:31 for the victory.
Stephan Dance and Desmond Nutter each had sacks for the Eagles. Dance and Ellis Throckmorton each had eight total tackles and Nutter also had three tackles for losses. The Cadets picked off Husson three times while Rick Orio and Logan Steward had interceptions of their own for the visiting Green and Gold.
Husson (5-4, 4-2 ECFC) will host Mount Ida next week on the 16th at 1:00pm. Husson will honor the Eagle seniors who will be playing in their final home game.
