Eagles Oust Owls in Orono

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Orono, ME - While the weather outside was gorgeous, the Eagles Softball team was busy shining inside the University of Maine at Orno's Mahaney Dome as they took down the Owls of the University of Maine-Presque Isle in a pair of five inning games on Sunday.

Husson won the first match-up by a score of 19-0 before the game was ended in the fifth inning. The Eagles scored runs in every inning and benefitted from a 14-run third to take the win in game one. Shortstop Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) found her swing in the dome after struggling in Florida, going 3-3 at the dish, driving in four runs and scoring another to lead the Husson offense. Sophomore Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, ME) got it done on both sides, throwing three scoreless innings while allowing just two hits and striking out five. At the plate, McCarty was 2-2 with a pair of RBI and a run scored to help her cause. First year infielder Ashley Smith (Ellsworth, ME) turned in an impressive game one going 3-4 with three RBI and as many runs scored.

In game two, it was more of the same for Husson as they once again forced the game to end after five innings, earning the win by a score of 9-0. Offensively for the Eagles, Smith was once again swinging a hot bat, going 2-3 with three RBI and two runs scored including a fourth inning home run, her first in a Husson uniform. Felow first year player Chelsea Brennan (Woonsocket, RI) also went yard in the game with her first as an Eagle, turning in a 1-3 day at the plate with three RBI and a run scored. In the circle, Husson received a dominant performance by junior Kody Lyon (Dalton, NH) who went four scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out nine. Sophomore hurler Amanda Ryan (Brewer, ME) came in in relief for a total of three innings over the two games, striking out seven comined without allowing a hit.

The Eagles will travel to Bates on Tuesday, March 27th for a double header beginning at 3:30 pm. Those games were originally scheduled for April 24th. Husson will return home next Thurday, March 29th for their home opener when they host Colby in a double header beginning at 3:30 pm.
