Box Score Bangor, ME - Husson Football lost on Saturday to Castleton by a final score of 34-14. The Eagles kept the game close most of the way, but several calls against Husson in the second half would halt the Green and Gold's momentum.
The defense played well for the Eagles, led by defensive lineman Ernest Wiggins and current defensive player of the week in the ECFC, Dellon Douglas. Wiggins forced a key early fumble on the Spartans first drive, thwarting a sure score by Castleton. Dom Mowrer recovered for Husson, taking over on their own two yard line.
Husson went three-and-out on their first drive, forcing Reece Attard to enter to punt for 51 yards and out of bounds at the Spartan 43.
Castleton drove almost 40 yards on their next possession, before deciding to go for it on fourth down at the Husson 19. Wiggins, John DiBiase and Godfrey Taylor tracked down quarterback Shane Brozowski for their second consecutive sack, earning back the football on their own 29.
The next three drives, two for Husson and one for Castleton, ended up in punts. The Spartans then readied themselves for the first points of the day, taking over after an Attard punt of 61 yards bounced into the endzone for a touchback. Brozowski and the high powered Spartan offense moved downfield for 80 yards in just over two minutes, scoring on a pass to Brandon Boyle from ten yards out to put Castleton on top early in the second quarter.
The Eagles failed to convert on their next drive on fourth down, faking a punt where Attard ran to his right for a loss of one yard.
The Spartans came charging back, scoring on the first play from scrimmage as Brozowski found Boyle yet again. The ECFC leading quarterback threw for 38 yards on the play to push the lead to 14-0.
Douglas forced another Castleton fumble on their next possession, setting up the Eagles at their own 16. On that same drive, Brozowski would leave the game due to a leg injury, putting George Busharis into the spotlight at quarterback. The Eagles were able to eat a large chunk of clock on the upcoming 12-play, 68-yard six minute drive, finally ending in a Kash Keezer interception by Keith Schneider.
After haltime, both offenses remained relatively stagnant collecting only three first downs total, before the Eagles were able to recover yet another Spartan fumble. Wiggins tackled runningback Tyler Carpenter at the Castleton three, forcing the turnover.
Keezer and the Husson offense elected to quarterback keep on the first play. Keezer made a nice play to his left, leaping over a defender near the corner for the touchdown. Attard added the extra point, and the Spartan lead was cut to 14-7.
The first play of the Spartans ensuing drive was nothing short of madness. Busharis' pass was intercepted by Mowrer at the Castleton 32, and ran into the end zone for seemingly the tying score. Husson was flagged twice on the play, causing confusion for several minutes as the officials discussed the outcome. Husson would eventually be called for sideline interference at the two yard marker and again one step later for Mowrer diving over the endline without needing to. By rule, both penalties were enforced, choking the Husson momentum and pushing the Eagles back to the Castleton 32.
Husson would eventually score on the drive, racking up the necessary 32 yards and scoring on a Taquan Broadway three yard run. Attards kick was true, tying the scoring at 14.
Castleton needed only two plays on their next drive to regain the lead. Carpenter ran for five yards to the Spartan 41 setting up a 59-yard pass to Boyle who ran for the majority of the yards after the catch. Castleton regained the lead 21-14.
The visiting Spartans started their next drive at their own 46 and looked to score once again. This time kicker Dave Fox hit a 26 yard field goal to extend the lead. Fox hit yet again six minutes later to push the score to 27-14.
Carpenter would punch the final score into the endzone from four yards out at the 1:01 mark, to give the Spartans a 34-14 lead, the final score.
Husson's final defensive numbers were good, besting Castleton in nearly every category. The Eagles sacked Spartan quarterbacks six times on the day for losses of 31 yards including three from Ernest Wiggins for 15 yards. Wiggins also had 6.5 out of the teams 10.5 tackles for losses, totaling 41 yards. The junior forced two fumbles recovering one and broke up two big pass plays as well.
Brozowski racked up 312 yards before leaving the game, scoring his two touchdowns by way of Boyle both times. Boyle ended the game with 221 yards receiving, the longest for 59 on one of his three touchdowns.
The five Husson seniors (Keezer, Taylor, Douglas, Michael Farrell and Todd Steward) were honored with their parents and friends on-field before the game. The Eagles took the time to recognize the work and dedication each has put forth for the program.
Husson will travel to Paxton, Massachusetts next Saturday to take on the AMCATs of Anna Maria College in both teams' final game of the season at 1:00pm. Husson defeated AMC 28-22 in week three in a non-conference matchup. Ryan Dorso was the hero of that contest, scoring a come-from-behind, 75-yard touchdown with less than two minutes to go for the win.
