Husson Ends Playoff Run With Loss to Castleton

Castleton, VT- Husson Women's Soccer fell 2-0 to Castleton Wednesday afternoon ending their season and a run at the NAC Championship.

Castleton who entered the game ranked 2nd in the NAC put up 29 shots on the match, Husson who entered as the three-seed were unable to produce any effective offensive pressure with just one shot on net.

Husson was able to hold the Spartans scoreless for the first 32 minutes of the game despite numerous opportunities in front of the Husson net. Defensively Husson was able to combat the Spartans for the majority of the first half.

The Spartans pressured the Eagles and their sophomore goalkeeper Jess Poulin (Albion, ME), but didn't score until their 14th shot of the half.  Castleton Halie Roberge (Southington) had the ball on the near the sidelines and sent a bouncing cross toward the net. Freshman Mallory Costello (Vernon, NJ) charged the near post and put a foot on the ball to deflect it past the right shoulder of Poulin and into the far corner of the net.

Castleton added to their lead 16 minutes into the second half when Kelsey Garecau (St. Albans, VT) sent a cross into the middle of the box for Costello. She touched the ball back to Sarah Ethier (Portsmouth, R.I.), positioned just inside the near corner, and the senior blasted it into the far upper corner of the net.

Spartans freshmen keeper Kaleigh Newton (Morrisville, Vt.) was forced to make one save in net for the shutout victory. Poulin made seven saves in the loss for Husson.

"It's unfortunate that our season had to end on a loss, but that's how the playoff season goes. Our team put forth a tremendous effort today and I am so proud of them." Said Coach Carly Gettler after the game, "I especially want to mention the fantastic contributions from our five seniors today; Amanda Mora, Emily Zurcher, Lauren Marcoux, Kayleigh Piccirillo, and Meghan O'Neil, they set the tone for us all game and capped off fabulous careers for Husson."

Husson ends their season with an overall record of 7-13-1. Castleton will now play Saturday against the winner of the Colby-Sawyer/Maine Farmington semifinal.
