Emmanuel College 3 – Husson University 1
The Husson women's soccer team lost a tightly contested contest to the Saints of Emmanuel College on a wet Boucher Field early Saturday morning. The first game of the Classic was marred by sporadic showers and a slick ball, which found its way into the Husson net more often than the host team would have liked.
Emmanuel got their first tally seven and a half minutes into the game when they suffered an own goal as a result of the wet conditions. The Eagles made up for their blunder about ten minutes in the second half when Katie DeShane (Old Town, ME) found Becca Jones (Newmarket, NH) with a left to right cross, and the sophomore attacker finished with the soft touch.
The Saints would retake the lead in the 62nd minute when Brittany Ridge (Portland, ME) set up Donandrea Myette (Portsmouth, RI) at the 18 where she placed a spectacular strike into the upper 90. Emmanuel stretched their lead a minute later on another Ridge assist when her through ball found a streaking Darcey Sulllivan (Dalton, MA) down the left flank.
The Eagles return to action in Day 2 of the 2011 Husson Classic tomorrow at noon when they take on the University of New England. Emmanuel will take on Maine Maritime tomorrow morning with the first kick scheduled for 9:30 am.
University of New England 6 – Maine Maritime Academy 0
The Nor'easters rolled into Bangor as the clouds above dispersed and UNE stormed to a 6-0 victory of the Mariners of Maine Maritime Academy. UNE was better in every statistical category, not allowing a Mariner to take a shot while notching 42 of their own, and put six different players into the goal column.
UNE started the scoring 5 minutes into the game, with a tally from Nicole Faircloth (Westfield, MA), and then two more less than two minutes apart just over a half hour into the game, and the Nor'easters went into half up 3-0.
In the second half, UNE scored three goals within 5 minutes just over the hour mark, the first two of the half came off Emily Lodge (Lyman, ME) assists, and the third when an Ellie Arsenault (Saco, ME) corner found a waiting Kaitlyn Hall (Dayton, ME), to complete the Nor'easter scoring.
Maine Maritime saw a great performance out of their freshman goalkeeper Taylor O'Malley (Middletown, RI) despite the loss. O'Malley recorded 20 saves, and let just 6 bye as 26 of the 42 shots in her direction were on target.
The University of New England takes on the host Eagles tomorrow at noon and MMA returns to action at 9:30 am to take on Emmanuel to start the second day of action for the 2nd Annual Husson Classic.

Husson University 3 – University of New England 0
The Husson Men's soccer team picked up their first win of a season, topping the Nor'easters 3-0 in the final day one contest of the 2nd Annual Husson Classic. Greg Dawson (St. Andrews, Scotland) led the Eagles with two goals in the game, and Mason Smith (Houma, LA) earned the shutout, saving 8, including a spectacular dive across the goalie box to keep the game scoreless.
The Eagles got on the board 12 minutes in, when Chris DelGuidice (Oakland, ME) placed a nice cross at Dawson's feet from nearly the midfield line, and the senior forward danced past the keeper and found the empty net.
Dawson scored another off a set-piece from the arc of the 18 that beat the dive of the goalie and stretched the Eagle lead to two. Abdiel Reid (Highland Park, NJ) who'd come on mid-way through the half benefited from a Philip Frost (Bangor, ME) assist, and showed some lightning quickness to react and score the third and final goal for the Eagles.
UNE got a strong performance from first year forward Zack Bunnell (Amesbury, MA) putting 3 shots on net to lead the Nor'easters. Senior goalkeeper Jon Planer (Yarmouth, ME) recorded 8 saves as well, but the Eagle pressure was noticeably higher than that of the visiting squad.
Husson Head Coach Jeff Gettler was animated when talking about his team's performance tonight, "It was a great effort tonight, that's really what we're looking for. The one thing we know we can always control is our effort and tonight we went out and put in more effort that our opponent."
"Some guys came off the bench and did some good things;
Jake Erskine, Abdiel, and Andrew Stevick. Those three really picked us up and that's what we're looking for when we make changes.Realistically having a game under our belt did wonders for us,
Andrew Austin and Michael Desmond played fantastically better than in their first college game" Gettler continued.
When asked about the current stretch of his schedule, Coach Gettler had this to say, "Because of the nature of playing three games in four days and the willingness of the players to follow our nutritional and regenerational guidelines, we feel like we can control one thing again tomorrow, that we put out a bigger and better effort than Emmanuel."
The Eagles will take on the Saints at 5:00PM tomorrow, which is an "Eagle Alert Game" and should prove to be a fantastic atmosphere for a quality matchup in the second day of the Husson Classic. The Nor'easters will take on Maine Maritime at 2:30PM.
