Box Score Bangor, ME - The Husson University Men's soccer team won the 2011 NAC Soccer Championship on a late goal knocked in by sophomore Zach Emeigh. The entire game was back and forth, with the Eagles striking first, and the Spartans returning the favor soon after. The Emeigh goal came at 88:23, less than two minutes to go in regulation, to break the 2-2 tie.
The first few minutes of the match were evenly played, with the shot total tied 3-3 after eight minutes. Husson would have the early luck however, as senior Tyler Metevier would lob a ball over the heads of defenders to first-year student Philip Frost who touched once and then rifled a shot over the head of Castleton sophomore goalkeeper Nate Koenemann for the score.
Castleton would have an answer for the Eagles, however, just under 12 minutes later as Husson committed an infraction giving the Spartans a free kick from 40 yards out. Junior Dillon Zaengle would put the set-piece into the box as it reached the back post and senior Nick Johnas would head the ball into the back of the net, knotting the score at one-all.
Husson had one more chance to score before the half ended as scrum at the goal mouth resulted in three Eagle shots in less than ten seconds and Metevier put the final effort over the goal. The teams would head to the sidelines for halftime tied 1-1.
Frost would put the Eagles on the board once again 13 minutes into the 2nd half as he headed a ball into the goal that came off the foot of first-year student Mike Desmond.
Yet again Castleton would be close behind in lighting up the board as Husson misplayed a free kick in their own box taken by Zaengle and into the net for the equalizer. 2-2 would be the score for another 20-plus minutes of play as both teams battled for every extra inch.
Just as the match seemed destined for overtime, the Eagles would utilize the long flip throw technique of first-year student Andrew Austin as Austin threw in toward the back post. Spartan keeper Koenemann got a hand on the initial throw, deflecting it off the far side post. The ricochet came directly at the feet of Emeigh who buried it between five Spartans.
Head Coach Jeff Gettler spoke of the win after the game: "I thought it was a championship performance. We've been talking for a couple of weeks about a championship effort and we identified the components of that and been building towards that. I thought today we did everything. We scored, they came back, we went ahead, they came back and we found a way to win. The guys are so excited about everything – it's not a question of pressure or doing something different, they've been able to keep building on what they've been doing and getting a little better each time we go out to train or play, and today was the culmination of that. Now we look to get even a little better in the coming weeks."
Three Spartans and four Eagles, along with an MVP were selected to the NAC All-Tournament team following the game.
