Eagles Mount Thrilling Comeback Over Beavers - Remain in 1st Place in NAC

Box Score

Bangor, ME - The Husson University men's soccer team struck twice in the second half to complete the comeback against the University of Maine at Farmington 2-1 in North Atlantic Conference action tonight. With the win, the Eagles improve to 7-1 in the NAC (9-6-1 overall) and remain in 1st place in the conference, while UMF falls to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in conference play.

The Beavers were on the board first, netting the only goal of the first half when the Eagles' back line mishandled a cross that landed at the feet of Jordan Hale (Falmouth, ME). With the ball, and the Husson keeper charging towards him, Hale served the ball goalward and Joc Caldwell (Grafton, MA) was able to help it over the line. UMF took a 1-0 lead and had the momentum going into the break.

A rejeuvenated Husson team came back out for the second half, and 13 minutes into the final stanza, Zach Emeigh (Ellsworth, ME) carried the ball up the right flank and sent a brilliant ball toward the box, and it was redirected by Philip Frost (Bangor, ME) who put his team-lead-tying 8th goal of the season with the sharp touch.

The game was looking like it was heading towards overtime, but the Eagles kept pressing, and with just under 5 minutes left to play, Husson earned a thow-in just past the team's bench. As is the case for most throws in the offensive end for the Eagles, Andrew Austin (Ellsworth, ME) stepped up to take the front-flipping long throw. Austin's throw was directly on goal, and UMF goalie Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, ME) tried to knock it over the bar, but the ball found the back of the net.

The decision to play the ball proved costly for Peters who played a strong contest otherwise, making 8 saves on the night. By rule, a player can not score on a throw-in should the ball fly directly into the net, but if it is touched by a defending player before it crosses the line, the goal is marked on the board. After a brief discussion by the officials, they came to a consensus and the eventual game-winner was confirmed.

The Eagles have one more NAC game on the schedule, traveling to Colby-Sawer for a 3:30 start on Saturday, while the Beavers host Johnson State on Sunday at 3:15.
