Husson Offense Opens Up Against Green Mountain

Box Score

Poultney, VT – On Sunday, October 16, the Green Mountain College Eagles women's soccer team played host to the visiting Husson University Eagles.  The home side suffered a 7-1 loss at the hands of the opposing Eagles.  The loss gives GMC a 2-9-1 record overall and a 1-6 record in conference games.  The Husson Eagles run their record to 6-9 overall, while their conference record improves to 5-2.

The visiting Eagles dictated the tempo of the game in the opening minutes with controlled passing and a balanced attack. As a result, Husson opened the scoring in the 8th minute off a direct kick from 18 yards out by sophomore Marcella Francoeur (Danville, NH).  Not long after, the visiting Eagles struck again in the 11th minute as senior Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, ME) converted a pass from senior Amanda Gifford (Lee, ME) that beat GMC sophomore keeper Emma Lord.

Halftime gave the GMC Eagles time to gather themselves and the women came out fighting harder for the ball than in the first half.  Unfortunately, Husson opened the second half with a quick goal in the 47th minute as Francoeur scored her second goal of the game.  She picked up a loose ball and fired it into the top left corner of the net.  Despite being down by three, the GMC Eagles didn't give up and their hard work paid off with a mark in the 58th minute.  On a loose ball from a corner kick, senior Sam Tajirian struck a lining shot directly over the Husson Eagles keeper's outstretch arms.  The home Eagles couldn't capitalize on a momentum shift; however, as Husson notched another goal in 59th minute on an own goal.  The visiting Husson squad continued to apply constant pressure until the final minute and put the game out of reach with three more tallies.  Sophomore Becca Jones (Newmarket, NH) scored on a penalty kick, while Laniewski netted two more goals to give her a hat trick on the day.

Freshman Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME) started in goal for Husson and earned the win to run her record to 4-6 while Emma Lord stopped five shots in a losing effort.  Her record falls to 2-9-1.

Next up for the GMC Eagles is a home game against Lyndon St. on Thursday, October 20 at 3:30 pm.  The Husson Eagles return home for their next game as they battle ME-Farmington on Wednesday, October 19 at 5:00 pm.
