Box Score Poultney, VT - The Green Mountain men's soccer team lost to Husson University 2-0 in a well played, physical contest Sunday, October 16th. The loss drops GMC to 1-11-1 on the season and a North Atlantic Conference record of 1-6. With the win Husson University moves to 8-6-1 and are 6-1 in conference play.
The first half was owned by Husson University. Their first goal came in the 10th minute when senior Greg Dawson (St. Andrews, Scotland) took a pass from freshman Mike Desmond (Scituate, MA) on the left flank that Dawson rocketed past Green Mountain College goalkeeper Nate Kishbaugh that found the lower right corner of the net. The score would remain 1-0 until the 43rd minute when freshman Andrew Austin (Ellsworth, ME) powered a throw-in into the box that found the head of freshman Patrick Van Dessel (Dover, NH) that slid past Kishbaugh putting Husson University up 2-0 going into the half.
The second half was much more physical as Green Mountain College created a number of quality chances in their comeback effort. GMC had the better run of play throughout large stretches, but were unable to close the gap. They came close in the 78th minute when junior Ryan Laymon ripped a shot from 25 feet out that struck the top left corner of the crossbar and flew out of bounds. That is the closest GMC would come as the score stayed at 2-0 as the clock wound down.
Junior goalkeeper Mason Smith (Houma, LA) took the win for Husson University. Smith was able to save all six shots that found there way to the goal. Kishbaugh received the loss for Green Mountain College, as he was able to save six shots on eight attempts.
Husson head coach Jeff Gettler was happy with the weekend as a whole, "We got a good result today. They guys played well, doubling their shots, Mason played well in goal and we got some good goals on the offensive end. I thought the guys got the result they needed. Other than the last minute against the Spartans, it was a great weekend. We did what we had to do today, and Castleton drew with MMA so we are now in first place by two points, looking forward to a great game under the lights against Farmington."
Husson University will now host the University of Maine at Farmington on Wednesday, October 19th at 7:00 pm for another North Atlantic Conference battle. Green Mountain College will host Lyndon State College October 19th at 3:30 pm for a NAC match before traveling to New England College October 25th.
