Box Score THROGGS NECK, N.Y. – Husson University fell to SUNY
Maritime 47-21 in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC)
season opener. With the Eagles leading 21-19 in the third
quarter, sophomore quarterback Joe Dickey (Middletown,
N.J./Middletown North) scored three straight rushing touchdowns to
propel the Privateers past the visiting Eagles, 47-21, for a
Homecoming victory. Dickey ended the afternoon with four touchdowns
on 53 rushing yards. Maritime improves to 4-0 on the season,
continuing its best start in program history, while opening the
ECFC slate 1-0. The Eagles fall to 0-4 (0-1 ECFC).
The Privateers amassed 511 yards of total offense, while keeping
Husson to just 162. Senior Greg McGough (Edgewater, Md./Blessed
Trinity) led all rushers with 124 yards on the ground, while
sophomore Fritz Jean (Palm Coast, Fla./Palm Coast) and junior Jamie
Spanopoulos (Franklin Square, N.Y./H. Frank Carey) also rushed for
over 100 yards as Jean had 111 yards and one touchdown and
Spanopoulos registered 102 rushing yards. Senior John Gagliano
(Islip Terrace, N.Y./St. Anthony's) scored the game's
first touchdown in the first quarter on a three-yard run.
In the air, Dickey was 1-for-5 for 12 yards, while his backup,
freshman Tyler Trodden (Somers, N.Y./JFK Catholic) recorded
Maritime's lone passing touchdown when he hooked up with Jean
on a 65-yard TD pass.
The Privateers had a 12-0 lead at the end of the first half
after rushing touchdowns by Gagliano (3 yards) and Jean (28 yards).
The lead was advanced to 19-0 after Dickey ran in a three-yard run,
his first TD of the day, at 13:04 of the second. Senior Madison
Leary's (Tavares, Fla./Tavares PAT kick was good.
Husson fought back the rest of the quarter, taking advantage of
two Maritime fumbles and turning them into touchdowns. Running back
Justin Linde threw a pass complete to Roderic Johnson, who ran the
ball in for a 54-yard touchdown. Johnson caught another pass for an
11-yard touchdown pass, this time from quarterback Jack Hersom,
with just 53 second remaining in the half.
The Eagles took their first lead of the season when the opening
kickoff of the second half was brought back 98 yards for a
touchdown and the PAT kick by Ivan Somerville was good, making the
score 21-19, Husson.
Dickey then scored the first of his three-straight touchdowns with
1:34 remaining in the third to give the Privateers the lead for
good, 27-21.
On defense, sophomore Pat Lasher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) led the
team with 11 total tackles (eight solo and six assisted), including
one for a loss of one yard. The Privateers recorded two sacks for
combined losses of 11 yards. The sacks by sophomore Thomas Boney
(Jacksonville, Fla./University Christian) and junior Rob Gorgy
(Hillsborough, N.J./Immaculata) came on back-to-back plays. Gorgy
also blocked a Husson PAT in the victory.
