Eagles No Match for Polar Bears

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Husson University Eagles ended their NCAA Regional Tournament run with a 14-2 loss to  the Bowdoin College Polar Bears at Wellesley College.  This season Husson claimed their second consecutive North Atlantic Conference championship and trip to the NCAA Regional Tournament.  The Eagles end their season at 28-15.

Bowdoin started strong in the top of the first, when Caroline Dewar (Katonah, NY) walked, Savonne Lord (Shrewsbury, MA) doubled, and Clare Ronan (Jenkintown, PA) drove in both with a single to right for an early 2-0 advantage. Husson replied in the bottom of the inning, as Courtney Hill (Calais, ME) singled, advanced on a fielder's choice and scored on Megan Richard's (Wilton, ME) single to center, trimming the lead to 2-1.

Two innings later, the Polar Bears pushed the lead to 4-1 with Hackett's first dinger of the day, a two-run blast over the centerfield fence. Gen Barlow (Norwich, CT) followed with a double and scored on Molly Nestor's (Duxbury, MA) single to center. Another double, this one from Lauren Coven (Ridgewood, NJ), plated Nestor to extend Bowdoin's lead to 6-1.

The Eagles chipped into the lead in the bottom of the third, when they used three consecutive singles to load the bases with one out. Kody Lyon's (Dalton, NH) single to left scored one, but Bowdoin's Barlow snagged a fly to right and threw a strike to double up Richard at home, ending the Husson rally.

Bowdoin broke the game open in the sixth, capitalizing on four hits, including doubles from Lord and Hackett, to score three runs and extend the lead to 9-2. Bowdoin added five more in seventh, including a grand slam from Hackett, stretching the lead to the final score of 14-2.

For Bowdoin, Hackett led the attack, going 3-for-4. Her seven RBI ties the Polar Bears' record and is one shy of the NCAA tournament record. Coven was 4-for-4, while Dewar, Ronan, Lord, Barlow, and Kara Nilan (Pittsfield, MA) tallied two hits each. Julia Jacobs (Ridgewood, NJ), 12-6, recorded the win for the Polar Bears, allowing 12 hits but allowing two runs in seven innings.

For Husson, Richard was 3-for-4 with one RBI. Hill, Cassie Berry (Newcastle, ME), Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME), and Diann Ramsey (Otisfield, ME) added two hits apiece. Sargent took the loss, allowing five hits and five runs in 2.2 innings of work.
