Box Score 2 LEWISTON, Maine -- Husson University swept a doubleheader from
the Bates College softball team on Monday at Lafayette Street
Field, taking Game 1 by a 4-2 score before blasting three home runs
in a 13-2 win in Game 2. Husson moves to 25-13 on the season
and will host the North Atlantic Conference Championship this
weekend as the number one seed.
The visiting Eagles collected only four hits in Game 1, but took
advantage of five Bates errors, as well as a strong pitching
performance by Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, Maine), who allowed one
run on three hits and no walks over six innings to raise her record
to 8-5.
Husson scored twice in the third inning, after loading the bases
with one out. Diann Ramsey (Otisfield, Maine) hit a fielder's
choice to second base, scoring Dorothy Cameron (South Plainfield,
N.J.). The throw from second to third, attempting to force out
Cassie Berry (Newcastle, Maine), went wide, and Berry made it home
safely when the throw to Bates sophomore catcher Leah Maciejewski
(Tewksbury, Mass.) sailed too high to make the play.
Bates got a run back in the fourth, as sophomore Lauren Dobish
(Chambersburg, Pa.) drove her second home run of the season over
the fence in left center.
Husson scored two more unearned runs in the fifth. Ramsey got a
second life after her foul popup was dropped, and she made the most
of it, doubling down the left-field line to score Berry, who
had singled, and Megan Richard (Wilton, Maine), who had
doubled.
The Bobcats scored one run in the seventh as Maciejewski singled
home sophomore Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) with two outs, but
Husson reliever Kara Poirier (Berlin, N.H.) go the last out to earn
her second save of the season.
Bates first-year pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.)
got the hard-luck loss in the game, allowing four runs, none
earned, on four hits and five walks while striking out five.
Husson exploded for 12 hits, including three home runs, in Game 2,
to force the game to end after five innings.
The Eagles plated four runs in the first inning on four hits,
including a towering solo home run to left field by Berry. Husson
added another run in the second with a two-out rally, as Cameron
tripled and scored on a double by Berry.
The Eagles opened the third inning with two walks, bringing up
Aimee Mortenson (Biddeford, Maine). Mortenson's fly to deep left
was caught by Bates sophomore Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) as
she tumbled over the fence. In spite of Bates' protestations,
Mortenson was awarded a three-run home run, putting Husson ahead
8-0. Megan Bradstreet continued the damage by doubling, then
scoring from third on an error. Berry made it 11-0 with her second
home run of the game, this time to center field.
Bates scored a run in the fourth on sophomore Libby King's (South
Portland, Maine) RBI double to right center, but Husson countered
with two more runs in the top of the fifth, both on double-steal
attempts, to make it 13-1. The Bobcats scored one more run in the
bottom of the fifth, as Ullmann led off with a triple to left
center, then scored on Talcott's RBI single.
Kody Lyon (Dalton, N.H.) earned the win for Husson to move to
12-6.
Bates next plays another non-conference home doubleheader on
Wednesday against the University of Southern Maine, starting at
3:30 p.m. Husson hosts Southern Maine Community College in a
twinbill on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
