Box Score 2 GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Katie Davis (Woburn,
Mass.) drove in all four runs with a home run and a double to give
the University of Southern Maine a 4-3 victory over Husson
University in the first game of a non-conference softball
doubleheader Friday afternoon at the USM Softball Field. The Eagles
came back in the second game to pound out 10 hits en route to an
8-5, darkness-shortened win to salvage a split of the
twinbill. The split left both teams with 3-11 overall
records.
In the opener, Davis slammed a two-run homer off the scoreboard in
the first inning, and later snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-run double
to left field in the fifth to account for all the USM runs.
Husson got a single run in the third when sophomore Sarah Risser
(Brewer, Maine) scored from first on an outfield throwing error
after advancing to third on a double by senior Cassie Berry
(Newcastle, Maine/Lincoln Academy). Husson tied the game in
the fifth when Berry scored on a single by sophomore Brianna
Webster (Belfast, Maine).
The Eagles pulled within one in the sixth when junior Dorothy
Cameron (South Plainfield, N.J.) scored on an infield throwing
error. The Eagles put the first two batters on in the
seventh, but USM sophomore reliever Nani Jacobs (Kahnawake, Quebec)
was able to save the victory for junior Sarah Deroche (Portland,
Maine/Deering).
In the nightcap, the Eagles built an 8-3 lead, then withstood a
Huskies' rally in the fifth with darkness descending upon the USM
Softball Field. The Eagles took the lead for good with three
runs in the third on an RBI single from Nicole Sargent (Sullivan,
Maine/Sumner Memorial) and a two-run single by junior Megan Richard
(Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue).
Husson added three more runs in the fourth when Cameron hit a
two-run triple and later scored on sophomore Kristen Sousa
(Detroit, Maine/M.C.I.) sacrifice bunt.
Southern Maine tallied two runs in the fifth when Davis singled up
the middle, and had the tying run at the plate before rookie
reliever Kara Poirier (Berlin, N.H.) came on to put out the fire
getting the final two outs to save the win for Sargent.
For USM, Davis finished the doubleheader going 4 for 5 with eight
RBI. Berry had two hits in each game for Husson.
Husson will host Colby College for a non-conference doubleheader
on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
