Eagles Split With Beavers

FARMINGTON, Maine -- Husson University split with the University of Maine at Farmington beginning with a 4-5 loss in the opener.  The Eagles collected 17 hits in routing the Beavers 16-2 in game two of the twinbill at Prescott Field.

The Beavers (5-11) are scheduled to host Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference doubleheader Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. The Eagles (19-13) are tabbed to take on Maine Maritime Academy in NAC action in Bangor Wednesday at 5 p.m.

In the first game, Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) clubbed a grand-slam home run and Kasey McPhail (Benton, ME) broke a 4-4 stalemate with a sacrifice fly plating Lily Barry (Hermon, ME) to lift the Beavers to the 5-4 victory.

Mitchell went 3 for 3 in the contest, adding a pair of singles, while McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) and Kaitlyn Bartlett (Chesterville, ME) each stroked two hits.

Shannon Mitchell (Portsmouth, NH) gave Farmington the 3-1 lead with a two-run home run in the third. Mitchell and McKell Barnes (Durham, ME) each had three-hit games with Barnes notching an RBI double.

Megan Richard (Wilton, ME) collected two singles in the loss. Diann Ramsey (Otisfield, ME) had an RBI single and Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, ME) squeezed in a run in the fourth to help the visitors tie the game

Jess Timmreck (Brunswick, ME) notched the pitching win as the junior scattered nine singles with four walks and a strikeout in a complete game.

Kara Poirier (Berlin, NH) went five innings in the loss with no walks and three strikeouts.

In the second game, Poirier, Dottie Cameron (South Plainfield, NJ) and Brianna Webster (Belfast, ME) each drove in three runs as the Eagles rolled to the 16-2 win in six innings via the mercy rule.

Webster singled twice and doubled to lead the attack with Ramsey singling four times, Poirier singling and doubling and Cameron belting a two-run home run. Cassie Berry (Newcastle, ME) and Lona Sargent (Sullivan, ME) also enjoyed two-hit games.

The Eagles led 9-0 after four-and-a-half innings, but Farmington briefly held off the eight-run mercy rule with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Husson erupted for seven runs on five hits and three walks in the sixth to finish off the win.

McPhail singled three times for the Beavers with Barnes adding a pair of singles. Mitchell plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Kody Lyon (Dalton, NH) earned the win after splitting mound time with Nicole Sargent (Sullivan, ME). Lyon struck out one in three innings of relief.

Whitney Page (Sorrento, ME) surrendered eight hits with two walks over three innings in defeat.
