Box Score Castleton, VT - The Husson University men's soccer team
played
to a 3-3 tie with Castleton State College Sunday afternoon in
North
Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at the Spartan Stadium.
Husson broke through for the first goal in the 22nd minute of play
when
John DeStefano (Auburn, NH) struck for his second goal of the
season.
DeStafano one touched a free kick from Mark Trombley (Burnham, ME)
just
past the outstretched arm of Castleton keeper Mike Anthony
(Dartmouth,
ME) and into the lower left corner of the goal.
Chris Mulholland (Ridgefield Park, NJ) wasted little time in
scoring
the equalizer for the Spartans, converting a Josh Costa (Sutton,
MA)
assist into his fifth goal of the season just one-and-a-half
minutes
later.
Costa made the score 2-1 on a second half penalty kick, but
Husson
scored two unanswered goals two minutes apart to take a 3-2 lead.
Tylere
Metevier (Kittery, ME) headed his sixth goal of the season past
Anthony
(five saves) in the 54th minute and Alex Martin (Van Buren, ME)
scored
his fourth just two minutes later.
Castleton tied the score in the 63rd minute, as Sean
Fitzgerald
(Saratoga Springs, NY) chipped his seventh goal of the season
over
goalie Miguel Dominguez (Rome, GA) and in. Billy Lund (Monson,
MA)
played the long serve into the box and Fitzgerald deftly flicked
it over
his shoulder and in.
Husson's best chance to take an overtime victory came with
2:30
remaining in the second overtime. Anthony took a free kick just
outside
the Castleton penalty box, which was intercepted by Rob Cowart
(Rome,
GA). Cowart unleashed a shot on goal and a scrambling Anthony was
able
to punch it over the crossbar and out of harms way.
Castleton had a counter attack one minute later as Trevor
Kotrady
(Clarendon, VT) found himself all alone with Dominguez (four
saves) but
was unable to get his shot past the keeper.
In a rematch of the past two NAC Championships, both team
displayed the
same intense style that has marked the rivalry for the past
four
seasons. The two teams have played 11 times since joining the NAC
in
2002, with Castleton holding a 6-3-2 advantage. Since 2005 the
rivalry
has tightened with Castleton holding a 3-2-2 advantage, and
neither team
has won by more than one goal.
Castleton's record moves to 7-5-2 (3-1-1 NAC), while Husson goes
to
5-8-2 (2-0-2 NAC).
Husson returns to conference play next Saturday when the Eagles
play
host to Lyndon State at 3:00 pm. Castleton will travel to
Middlebury
College Wednesday for a non-conference game slated to start at
3:00 pm.
