AMHERST, Mass. - The Husson University men's soccer team sees their historic season come to a close after a 2-0 loss at No. 6 Amherst College on a windy Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Division III NCAA Tournament.

It was an even first half on a at Gooding Field as the Mammoths (13-1-5) controlled the ball but it was the Eagles (15-4-2) who had the best chance of the half as freshman Miguel Morales played a cheeky back heal to freshman Carlos Etchevers who beat a man before ripping a shot from the top of the box but his effort was blocked. Amherst fired six shots with only two on target as the game was scoreless after the first half.

The second half was much of the same as the Mammoths continued to hold most of the possession and they was finally rewarded in the 64th minute. On their eighth quarter of the match, the ball bounced around the box as the Eagles were unable to clear it and Nico Kenary pounced on the chance for the easy goal. The NESCAC champions put the game to bed ten minutes later on a header by Aidan Curtis as the Mammoths advance to the second round of the tournament.

Sophomore Alex Rechsteiner made three saves in goal for the Eagles as the back line only allowed five shots on goal.

""Today was a tremendously difficult match that took an incredible effort to keep us in the game for as long as we did," said head coach Gavin Penny. "I'm proud of the lads, they played hard and competed against one of the best in the nation. I told the lads, win or lose we come away with our heads held high and generate some respect. I think we can say that we accomplished those goals. They have given everything but it wasn't to be our day. It has been a successful fall season nonetheless, and the lads should feel good about what they have accomplished. As with the end of every season, preparing for the next season begins. Best of luck to Justin and Amherst in the rest of the tournament".
