Men's Soccer Picks Up 5-0 NAC Win over UMPI in Northern Maine

Box Score

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine - The Husson University men's soccer team continued their good form in the North Atlantic Conference after a 5-0 victory over the University of Maine at Presque Isle Owls on a rainy Thursday afternoon at Park Family Field. With the victory, the Eagles have moved into a tie for first place in the NAC East standings with a 3-0-1 record and a 6-2-2 record over. The Owls remain winless on the season with a 0-5 conference record and 0-8 overall.

The Eagles began the game on the front foot and were rewarded in the 25th minute with the breakthrough as Mario Alvarez's shot was redirected by Oscar Berntsson and past the keeper for the opener. Five minutes later the lead was doubled as Mosi Masimango stole the ball in the middle of the park and found Berntsson down the wing and he beat the keeper 1v1 for a first half brace. A couple more chances happened for the Eagles in the final 15 minutes of the half but the lead stayed at 2-0 at halftime.

Again it was all Eagles in the second half as they were again rewarded in the 57th minute. Alvarez with plenty of space from 30 yards out delivered a brillant ball to the left side of the box and Jordi Cabau was there to tap the ball to the penalty spot and Berntsson earned his hat trick goal.

In the dying moments of the match; Nate Chamberland and Arni Hreidarsson scored their first collegiate goals in a span of 90 seconds as the Eagles left northern Maine with the 5-0 victory.

Head coach Gavin Penny with his reaction from the victory. "We had to be patient throughout the match because we had a lot of possession and knew it was going to be a challenge with very limited space in the final third. It's always hard when teams sit and defend so deep because it forces you to be creative with the ball. We were unlucky not to score in the first minute of the match which I think would have settled us down a little sooner. But I can't complain with five more goals, another clean sheet for one skipper, and a hat-trick from my other skipper. Credit to Oscar, the lad has worked tremendously hard in trainings, he was very deserving today. We can only hope Kiko's injury isn't as bad as it seems, it's a shame that had to happen in the final minutes of the game. It's another convincing win and display from our young group, hopefully we will be able to replicate this performance on Saturday."

The three game road trip has come to a close and men's soccer is back home on Saturday, October 2nd for their final home non-conference game of the season when they host Lesley University at Boucher Field. Kickoff for the match is set for 3:30 p.m.
