Football Toppled by WPI, 31-12

Box Score

BANGOR, Maine - The Husson Eagles (0-2) were toppled by the Worcester Polytechnic Engineers (3-0) in non-conference play on a sunny Saturday afternoon at the John W. Winkin Sports Complex, by a final score of 31-12.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Although the Eagles looked like they were going to jump out to an early lead (following an interception by Eagles' defensive back Zach Connolly off Engineers' quarterback Julian Nyland), it was actually WPI that opened up the scoring. A Husson fumble led to a 15-play drive from the Engineers, which stalled out near the goal line; Engineers' kicker Bryan Wade knocked in a 21-yard field goal to give WPI a 3-0 lead, which accounted for all of the scoring in the first quarter.

WPI running back Sean McAllen put the Engineers on his back in the second quarter, running in three touchdowns on three consecutive drives to heighten the Engineer lead to 24-0. However, the Eagles managed to avoid a first-half shutout as quarterback David Morrison found tight end Keyshaun Robinson for a 26-yard touchdown strike with five seconds left. A missed PAT left the score at 24-6 entering the half.

A scoreless third quarter gave way to another Eagles score in the fourth quarter, as Morrison connected with wide receiver Tyler Halls for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 6:50 remaining. The Engineers responded by taking the ball 70 yards in nine plays, with running back Connor Field punching in a 4-yard touchdown with under two minutes remaining (the Wade PAT was good) to bring the score to 31-12.

TEAM LEADERS - HUSSON:

For the Eagles, Morrison completed 25 of 41 passes for 265 yards, 2 TDs and an INT, while also running for 28 yards on four carries. Halls and Robinson each caught seven passes and a touchdown, with them tallying 114 and 75 yards, respectively. Wide receiver Patrick Cullen added 61 yards on 8 catches.

On the other side of the ball, Connolly (nine TT, INT) and Nick Alvarez (seven TT, INT, two passes broken up) were all over the field. Defensive lineman David Redmond recorded ten total tackles and recovered a fumble.

TEAM LEADERS - WPI:

For the Engineers, Nyland completed 13 of 20 passes for 203 yards and two INTs, while adding 53 yards on six rushing attempts. McAllen found the end zone three times, running for an even 4.0 yards per carry (21 carries, 84 yards) while adding a 20-yard reception. Field added another 81 yards on 17 carries as well as a 5-yard reception. Wide receivers Billy Mitchell, Nic Rossi and Clark Ewen each notched three receptions, totaling 57, 51 and 48 yards through the air, respectively.

On defense, linebacker Nick Ostrowski recorded ten total tackles, including a tackle for loss. Defensive backs Steve Mey and Sam Casey notched seven and six total tackles, respectively. Defensive back Max Storch had five stops and an interception. Linebacker Brent Whitlock totaled three tackles (0.5 for loss) and recovered a fumble.
