Box Score BANGOR, Maine - The Eagles (2-3, 2-0 CCC Football) held on to claim victory over the Curry College Colonels (1-4, 1-1 CCC Football) by a final score of 42-40 on a rainy Saturday at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
In a very busy first minute of action, Husson running back Shawn Noel, Jr. returned the opening kickoff for an 81-yard touchdown. Soon after, Curry quarterback Nick Juvelier delivered an 80-yard touchdown strike to wide receiver Nick Villanueva. Evan Damian's extra-point attempt missed, which left the score at 7-6 in favor of Husson before the first minute was up.
Quarterback David Morrison completed all five of his passes on the next drive for 68 yards, culminating in a 33-yard touchdown pass to tight end Aidan Hogan, with kicker Devin Pickett extending the lead to 14-6 following the extra point. However, Juvelier matched Morrison's 33-yard TD pass with his own, to running back D'Aundray Burcy to cap off a 6-play, 61-yard drive that took just two minutes and 37 seconds. A two-point conversion attempt by the Colonels was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 14-12 in the Eagles' favor. The following Eagle drive started off with two runs of 10+ yards by running back Garrett Poussard and ended with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Morrison to wide receiver Keyshaun Robinson - Pickett's extra point brought the Husson lead to nine (21-12), capping the scoring in the first quarter.
Both teams struggled to put up points throughout the second, until an odd play including two changes of possession took place. Morrison was intercepted by Curry defensive back Jake MacNeil, however MacNeil fumbled, with Robinson recovering at the Curry 41-yard line. Three straight Noel, Jr. rushes of seven, nine and 25 yards, respectively notched the first Husson rushing touchdown of the day and extended the Eagles' lead to 28-12 before halftime.
Curry received the ball at the start of the third quarter, with the team moving the ball methodically for a 12-play, 61-yard touchdown drive. Running back Zach Levy gained 37 yards on the ground, leading to a 7-yard touchdown pass from Juvelier to running back Jason Cambra to thin the Eagle lead to 28-18 (Curry two-point conversion attempt failed). The Eagles answered with a 22-yard keeper from Morrison to make the score 35-18.
Juvelier and the Colonels found themselves in a groove, answering Husson's score with their own. A 9-yard touchdown pass from Juvelier to wide receiver Alex Rosemond, followed by a successful two-point conversion from Juvelier to Villanueva, brought the score to 35-26 in favor of Husson. However, the Eagles refused to back down. Noel, Jr. pounded the rock for 39 yards of rushing offense on the next drive, where he punched in a 2-yard score (his third touchdown of the day, second on the ground) to give Husson a 42-26 lead early in the fourth quarter. Pickett's ensuing kickoff was returned 49 yards to the Husson 35-yard line by Curry wide receiver Tahg Coakley, which promptly led to a 35-yard Juvelier touchdown to Villanueva on the next play. Another successful two-point conversion from the aforementioned Curry duo reduced the Husson lead to 42-34.
After back-to-back punts, Noel, Jr. fumbled deep in Colonel territory, with MacNeil recovering the ball at his own 22-yard line. This led to a 6-play, 78-yard drive capped off by a 42-yard touchdown run by Levy, bringing the score to 42-40. A Husson offsides penalty inched the ball to the 2-yard line for the ensuing two-point conversion attempt, but it was all for naught; Eagles' defensive lineman David Redmond made a crucial stop on a Juvelier keeper to maintain his team's lead and help the Eagles secure their second consecutive victory in the Commonwealth Coast Football.
