Bangor, ME- Husson men's basketball earned a tough NAC win at home against Lyndon State on Friday night, 77-65. Both the local Husson supporters and on-campus community braved the day-long northeast snowstorm to fill Newman Gymnasium and help Husson to a key victory.
Trevon Butler led the Eagle charge yet again, scoring 20 points on 7 of 15 shooting while draining two threes and knocking down 4 of 5 at the line.
Four Eagles finished in double digits including Butler, Raheem Anderson, Darryl Wood and Tyler Norris, who all hit key shots during important stretches in the second half. Wood garnished seven total rebounds on the night and added two blocks to his statline.
Husson struggled early on however, falling behind nine with 7:37 left in the first. Lyndon carried that lead until the 3:57 mark when Mitch Worcester hit a lone free throw and two back-to-back threes to cut the Hornet lead to one. Butler doused the Hornets' nest with two free throws with a minute and a half left in the first and Anderson knocked down a big three to take a four point lead into the break.
"The first half was a grind but we found ourselves up four at half," head coach Warren Caruso stated at the midway point. "In the second our guys fed off our student section and we had a good early run fueled by Tyler [Norris] and Trevon [Butler] to gain some separation."
Separation was sure the focus in the second half for Husson. The Eagles went on a 22-8 run to start the second frame, building on their pre-halftime lead to 53-35.
The Green and Gold pushed their lead to 22 at the six-and-a-half mark of the second on yet another Butler quick jumper to go ahead 63-41 and never look back.
Husson will return to the Newman hardwood Saturday afternoon for a 3:00pm tilt with Johnson State in the second half of what's been unofficially deemed the NAC "Presidential Series" when teams host Lyndon & Johnson. The Eagles will be playing in their 8th game in 16 days which will lead to a week-long break until traveling to Vermont next weekend.
