Box Score BANGOR, Maine - The 2016 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Player of the Year Trevon Butler scored a game-high 22 points to help propel Husson to a 91-76 win over Thomas College in a NAC Championship semifinal match-up on Friday night inside Newman Gym to advance to their fourth straight NAC Championship final.
Husson (20-6) records their fourth straight 20 win season, while Thomas (19-8) drops its seventh straight postseason game to the Eagles and falls to 95-9 in the all-time series.
Thomas jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes, but Husson went on a 14-0 run thanks to Baskets by Zach Curran, Alonzo McCain, Butler, Raheem Anderson, Darryl Wood and Eli Itkin to take a 16-9 lead as the clock ticked under the 13:00 mark.
Jarrod Leonardi stopped the run with a layup with 12:38 to play, and then drained a 3-pointer at the 10:55 mark to draw the Terriers within three points, 21-18. The Eagles responded with an 8-1 run to push the lead to double-digits at 29-19 before Dayne Savage hit a jumper with 5:47 to play in the half.
Sparked by a pair of Butler 3-pointers, the Eagles went on a 10-2 run to increase the lead to 16 with 3:25 remaining. Thomas countered with a layup from Levi Barnes and a Mike Akanji trey to trail just 39-28 with 2:21 left in the half. The Eagles closed out the half on a 6-0 run behind another trey from Butler and a buzzer beater from Anderson as the first half buzzer sounded.
Butler and Anderson led the Eagles with 13 and 12 first half points, respectively. Justin Martin and Carlos Gonzales led the field with six first half rebounds. Barnes led the Terriers with ten points, while Leonardi added five off the bench.
The Terriers tried to claw their way back into game in the second half behind ten made 3-point shots, but only could cut the Husson lead to eight points as the Eagles pull away in the closing minutes of the half for the victory.
Butler added three rebounds and six steals to go along with his 22 points while Anderson finished with 22 points, five rebounds, two assists, and one steal. Wood contributed 16 points and Justin Martin added 9 points and a game-high 11 rebounds off the bench.
Barnes led all Terriers scorers with 19 points while Akanji added 18 points on six 3-pointers and Savage chipped in with 11 points off the bench.
Husson will host second seeded Colby-Sawyer on Saturday, February 27 in a rematch of last years' NAC Championship final to determine who will receive the NAC's automatic qualifier into the 2016 NCAA DIII Championship Tournament. The Chargers defeated third seeded Johnson State later in the day by a score of 99-95 in overtime. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
