Husson Drops NAC Game to Green Mountain, 98-95

Box Score

POULTNEY, Vt. – Facing an 18-point deficit at halftime, Green Mountain College rallied by posting 57 second half points while holding Husson University to just 37 en route to a 98-95 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory on Friday night at the Eagle Dome.

Green Mountain (18-4, 13-2 NAC) was led by big men Mychal Parker and Cameron Anderson who posted 28 and 24 points, respectively. The tandem also combined for 13 rebounds. Thomas Brown once again helped cinch the win down the stretch with several critical free throws as part of his 12 point, five rebound and six assist night. Patrick Rittmon and Sampson Dale each scored 11 points to aid in the win.

Husson (16-6, 12-3 NAC) was led by Trevon Butler who scored 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Raheem Anderson notched 20 points, hitting on 4-of-8 from deep. Zach Curran posted 10 points, while Darryl Wood led the reserves with 12.

To say that Husson shot the ball extremely well in the first half would be an understatement. The team shot 65.7 percent from the floor including a scorching 8-of-13 (61.5) percent from downtown as it built up its 18-point lead at the break. Part of that came from outrebounding the hosts by a 21-10 margin.

Despite the large deficit, however, Green Mountain opened the second half ablaze streaking on a 20-2 run to deadlock the game at 61-61 capped by a Parker layup.

The visitors then proceeded to post a run of their own and retook the lead on the strength of a 7-0 spurt, giving them a 68-61 advantage at the 10:40 mark. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes before the home side benefited from a pair of three-point plays from Brown and Anderson.

Brown made a tough driving layup while getting fouled and then promptly converted the ensuing free throw. Anderson then evened the score at 75-75 when he sank a three-pointer at the 6:59 mark. Javier Lugris' layup gave GMC its first lead of the game with 6:34 reamining and it was one that the team wouldn't relinquish the rest of the way.

Husson narrowed the deficit to a one-point game at several points, but the hosts hit 9-of-10 free throws down the stretch including four by both Brown and Anderson to seal the win.

Green Mountain and Husson will both be in action again tomorrow at 3 p.m. The home side will host Maine Maritime while Husson will skip over to Castleton to take on the Spartans.
