Men's Soccer Captures 2014 NAC Championship on Record-Setting Night

Box Score

Bangor, ME - The third-seeded Husson University men's soccer team beat fourth-seeded Thomas College, 4-0, to claim the 2014 North Atlantic Conference Championship on Saturday evening at Boucher Field.

Phil Frost (Bangor, ME) had three goals for the Eagles, surpassing the 100 career points mark for only the tenth time in Husson men's soccer history. He is the first player to achieve this mark since 1998. With the shutout, the 18th of his career, senior goalkeeper Brian Potter (Waterville, ME) became the all-time leader in career shutouts. Husson head coach Jeff Gettler also had a record-setting evening, recording his 300th career victory.

Husson improves to 13-7 on the season and will await its NCAA tournament pairing on Monday. Thomas falls to 10-5-3 on the year.

Michael Curtis (Ellsworth, ME) scored the only goal of the first half, as he put home a deflection in the 38th minute. Thomas held the slight 10-8 edge in shots in the first half and outshot the Eagles 28-17 on the night. Husson found the back of the net three more times in the second half, with all three goals coming from Frost.

Josh Bean (Ellsworth, ME) assisted Frost's first and second goals, which came just 1:11 apart in the 63rd minute of the game. Frost's fourth goal, assisted by Dylan Wetmore (Madawaska, ME) sealed the game for the Eagles in the 76th minute.

Gettler said of the victory, "This was a fantastic performance from the whole team tonight in a great playoff run. Thomas is a very good team, and, on the night, we just did so many things well that got us the result. I'm so proud of the guys for all the work they've put in this year, and this performance was the culmination of all that."

For the Terriers, Dakota Duplissie generated much of the team's offense, registering eight shots on the night. Tre Ming added five and threatened Husson's goalkeeper Potter a few times, but Potter preserved the shutout with 12 saves on the night. Joakim Sternas made three saves in the losing effort, and Winston Trott relieved him in the final ten minutes but did not need to make a save.

Husson's Stephen Berenyi (Levant, ME) was named the 2014 NAC Men's Soccer Championship Most Valuable Player following the game, and teammates Potter, Kyle Hargreaves (Raymond, ME), Frost, and Bean joined him on the All-Tournament Team. Thomas' Dakota Duplissie, Tre Ming, and Lukas Bohman were also named to the team, along with Michael Skarbelis and Brandon Currier from New England College and Rick Prindiville and Carlton Wheeler-Omiunu from Colby-Sawyer.
