Men's Basketball Defeats Green Mountain 87-73

Box Score

Poultney, Vt. – The Husson Eagles' strong first half performance led to a 87- 73 victory to move to 7-0 (3-0) against North Atlantic Conference opponent Green Mountain College Friday night at the Eagle Dome.

Senior guard Donte Cottonham (Silver Spring, MD) scored 18 of his team-high 20 points in the first half Husson, nailing six three-point shots. Senior forward Phil Leighton (Naples, ME) added 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds and sophomore forward Trevon Butler (Waterbury, CT) contributed 19 points and six rebounds for the visitors.

Senior guard Cassius Belfon tallied a game-high 21 points off the bench for Green Mountain, going six-for-seven from the charity stripe. Junior guard Robert Holloway went perfect from the field, hitting all seven of his attempts to add 16 points and six boards for the Green Mountain. Junior forward Terry Jones grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go along with his 14 points in the contest.

Husson shot well in the first half, going 16-for-32 from the field and 10-for-23 from behind the arc. Green Mountain struggled early on, hitting only eight of their first 20 shots from the field.

Green Mountain (2-4 1-2) heated up in the second half, outscoring Husson 46-42 in the final 20 minutes of the game, but that would not be enough to overcome the early lead Husson had created.

Foul shooting was a factor in the game and solidified the win for Husson, who went 12-for-17 from the line. Green Mountain struggled with free throws despite getting there more often, going 19-for-32.

"We got off to a great start in the first 10 minutes and managed the game well. We need a better defensive effort and to do a better job taking care of the ball on the road," said Head Coach Warren Caruso.

The Eagles will continue on their road trip as they travel to Castleton tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
