Box Score Bangor, ME - The Husson University field hockey team moved to 2-0 on the season Sunday with the help of a Kara Poirier goal 30 seconds into overtime over the Lyons of Wheaton College. The Eagles seemed to control the pace early in the game, scoring first. The Lyons would battle back however, scoring two unanswered goals leading up to a spectacular finish for the Eagles.
Husson's Mariah Arno would have the first stroke of the game nine and a half minutes into the first half, pushing it wide of the mark. A Wheaton infraction inside the their own arc would lead to an Eagle short corner taken by Sabrina Vallancourt with just over 18 minutes gone in the first. Vallancourt would find the ball back in front of the net and blasted the black in the back of the cage for the game's first score. (1-0 HUS)
Arno would have another scoring opportunity just over two minutes later , however good Lyon defense would prevail as the attempt was blocked and cleared by Wheaton as well as a Husson short corner moments later.
Fast forward seven minutes later as the first Wheaton shot came from Aliza Underhill, but first year Husson goalkeeper Christine McGee would make her first of eight saves on the balmy afternoon. Mcgee would turn away the Lyons once again under a minute later as Sarah McNicholas would try her hand at the cage to no avail.
A half-hour into the contest Wheaton started to show their skill and relentlessness as a barrage of short corners and shots would lead to a tie. After a third corner, Wheaton's Emily Asack would set up Underhill for a second time and Underhill wouldn't miss, tying the game at a goal apiece. (1-1 Tie)
The second half featured even more Lyons as Husson struggled early to advance into their offensive half. The ladies from Wheaton would control the pace for nearly the whole 2nd frame attempting nine corners and eight shots. 12:20 into the half this relentlessness of the Lyons would result in another score as Asack was back in the action scoring an unaided goal. (2-1 WHE)
It seemed as though the outcome was all but sure, but the Eagles made a late push as Mariah Arno would finally get into the books. With 1:18 remaining in regulation, Arno would muster one against the plywood to even the score and set up overtime. (2-0 Tie)
The seven-on-seven format of overtime proved to be the difference as it took the eagles 28 seconds to run the length of the field from the opening whistle and reel off two shots, the second of which gave Husson a sudden victory. Lori Hiltz had the first attempt at the cage as Wheaton goalie Ellie Massengill made her second save of the day. Unfortunately Massengill was unable to make her third save as Kara Poirier gathered and scored her third of the early season to give Husson the win only 30 seconds into overtime. (3-2 HUS)
Husson head coach Jen Johnstone stated after the game: "It was great to get our first win at home over a strong opponent such as Wheaton. Our women played strong and poised in the final minutes and in overtime. They showed a lot of heart and as a coach you can't really ask for much more. Overall it was a great win."
With the win, Husson improves to 2-0 on the season and Wheaton falls to 1-2, losing their second 3-2 overtime result.
Wheaton will next play one of their only five home games on the season versus Elmira on September 10th at 11:00am.
