Field hockey opens home slate with heart-breaking overtime loss to Saint Joseph’s

BANGOR, Maine — The Husson University field hockey team took a fourth-quarter lead and battled Saint Joseph's College of Maine into overtime on Saturday evening, but the Monks scored with just shy of minutes gone in the extra period to earn a 2-1 victory at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.

The Eagles (0-4) controlled much of the offensive pressure through the opening three quarters, holding Saint Joseph's (2-2) without a shot through the first 45 minutes. Husson generated five shots over that span while earning eight penalty corners.

Husson created a pair of quality chances late in the opening quarter. Sophomore Lauren Millett sent an attempt wide following a penalty corner before junior Mary Hamblin put a shot on goal at 14:12 that was turned aside by Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin.

The Eagles continued to pressure the Monks in the second and third quarters. Sophomore Maddie Morin had a shot saved late in the second before senior Tessa Capozzoli and Morin each forced McLaughlin into saves during the third period, keeping the game scoreless heading into the fourth.

Husson finally broke through at the 51:51 mark following a sustained stretch of pressure. The Eagles earned three penalty corners in just over four minutes, and after McLaughlin stopped a Morin attempt, senior Faith Tillotson converted the rebound for her first goal of the game. Millett was credited with the assist, giving Husson a 1-0 advantage.

Saint Joseph's answered less than five minutes later when Zoey Lailer scored at 56:19 off an assist from Dasia Alberico, leveling the contest at 1-1 and eventually sending the game to overtime.

Husson earned the first penalty corner of overtime at 62:16, but the Monks responded with three corners of their own over the ensuing two minutes. Lily Huntley had one shot blocked and another ring off the post before Lailer collected the game-winning goal at 63:58 off of Huntley's latter shot attempt to give Saint Joseph's the 2-1 victory.

Husson finished with a 7-6 advantage in shots and put six of its seven attempts on goal. The Eagles also held a 12-9 advantage in penalty corners.

Morin led Husson with three shots, all on goal, while Tillotson scored on her lone attempt. Hamblin and Capozzoli each added a shot on goal, while Millett finished with a shot and an assist.

McLaughlin finished with five saves for Saint Joseph's, while Husson sophomore goalkeeper Ella Duchette played the entire 63:58 in goal.

The Eagles will be back on the field on Friday when they take on the University of Southern Maine in Gorham at 4 p.m.
