Eagles Start 2011 on the Right Foot, Top Monks 2-0

Box Score

Bangor, ME --  The Husson Women's Soccer team kicked off the 2011 season with a 2-0 win over in state rival St. Joseph's College. The Eagles held the ball for the majority of the first half, generating 7 shots to the Monks 3 in the opening frame.

Marcella Francoeur (Danville, NH) found the back of the net first, with 12:24 remaining in the first half, taking advantage of a nifty left-to-right cross from Kelsey Brangiel (Newmarket, NH) who picked up the assist on the play.

Alexandra Laniewski (Scarborough, ME) got her first of the season about six minutes later, stretching the lead to 2 on a strike from the right side after showing some speed to find space. The Eagles kept up the pressure until the final buzzer and came through with the win.

First Year keeper Jessica Poulin (Albion, ME) recorded a shut-out in her first career start for the Eagles, saving all 5 shots on goal from the Monks.

St. Joseph's fought hard, generating chances to come back in the second half; Katherine Chambers (Hampden, ME) and Katelyn Call (Portland, ME) each had a pair of shots on goal for the Monks. Sophomore goalie Jaci Lorenzen (Winham, ME) recorded 4 saves in the loss for St. Joe's.

Husson returns to action this Saturday for a 9:30 am start when they take on Emmanuel (MA) to begin the 2nd annual Husson Classic, which showcases 8 men's and women's collegiate soccer games this weekend at Boucher Field. St. Joseph's hit the pitch again next Thursday, September, 8th when travel to another Maine foe Thomas College, with kickoff slated for 4:00 pm.
