Charles' game-winner sends women's soccer to NAC Championship following semifinal victory over MMA

BANGOR, Maine – A first-half goal from senior Olivia Charles and a strong defensive performance propelled the Husson University women's soccer team past Maine Maritime Academy, 1-0, in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) semifinals on Tuesday evening at John P. Boucher Field, sending the Eagles to the NAC championship game.

The Eagles improved to 9-5-2 overall with the victory, while the Mariners fell to 10-7-1.

Husson wasted little time establishing its offensive presence, controlling possession and creating several early scoring opportunities. Junior Ella Hosford and fifth year Marila Corletto each sent shots wide in the opening six minutes before the Eagles continued applying pressure with a pair of corner kicks.

The breakthrough came in the 14th minute when Charles found the back of the net at the 13:33 mark, scoring her team-leading 10th goal of the season. Sophomore Thea Gerfen and junior Paige Dunn were credited with assists on the eventual game-winning goal, giving Husson an early 1-0 advantage.

The Eagles continued to threaten following the opening tally, with Gerfen forcing Maine Maritime goalkeeper Isa Thesing into a save in the 18th minute. Charles and Dunn also generated additional scoring opportunities as Husson maintained control throughout much of the opening period.

Maine Maritime struggled to establish an offensive rhythm against the Eagles' defense, managing just three first-half shots. The Mariners' best opportunity came in the 43rd minute when Brenna Phalen directed a shot on goal, but Husson sophomore goalkeeper Gabriella Smith made the save to preserve the one-goal advantage heading into halftime.

Husson held a commanding 9-3 advantage in shots during the opening 45 minutes while also earning all five corner kicks of the half.

The Eagles picked up where they left off to begin the second half, immediately testing Thesing with scoring opportunities. Dunn placed a shot on target just 36 seconds into the period, forcing a save, before sophomore Jaquie Pangburn followed with another attempt in the 51st minute that Thesing turned away.

Gerfen continued to create opportunities for Husson, sending an attempt wide in the 57th minute, while senior Rylee Speed missed the target in the 68th minute.

Despite holding a slim one-goal advantage, the Eagles' defensive unit remained composed throughout the second half, limiting Maine Maritime to just one shot over the final 45 minutes.

The Mariners threatened to find the equalizer in the 84th minute when Abby Wong directed a shot toward the bottom-left corner, but Smith was positioned perfectly to make the save and maintain the shutout.

Husson nearly added an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Hosford put an attempt on target, but Thesing made her fourth save of the evening to keep the Mariners within striking distance.

The Eagles successfully closed out the remaining minutes to secure the shutout victory and punch their ticket to the NAC championship game.

Smith earned the shutout victory in goal for Husson, finishing with two saves across 90 minutes. Thesing recorded four saves in the loss for Maine Maritime.

Dunn paced the Eagles offensively with a game-high four shots, while Gerfen added three attempts and an assist. Charles finished with two shots, including the game-winning goal, while Hosford also contributed two attempts.

Husson finished with a 15-4 advantage in total shots, including a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Eagles also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Eagles' defense, anchored by Gerfen, Speed, freshman Olivia Lizzotte, sophomore Jillian Long and senior Emma Nicholson, helped limit the Mariners to just two shots on goal throughout the contest.

With the semifinal victory, Husson advances to the NAC championship game with an opportunity to capture the conference title and earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship. The Eagles will head to top-seeded Lesley University on Saturday for the title game with the time to be announced.
