Eagles Sink Mariners

Box Score

Maine Maritime won the tip, but each team traded multiple possessions before the first points went on the scoreboard. Jay Uhrin drew first blood from the free throw line, hitting both shots for the first two points of the game after 1:50 of gameplay. Paul Campbell hit the first field goal of the game on MMA's next possession, and he was quickly answered by Josh Jones on the other end.

MMA took its first lead of the game around 17 minutes when Shaun Dostie hit two shots from the line to put the Mariners up by two, but Husson tied it up with a Daeshawn McMorrin shot from the elbow, followed by an Uhrin layup, putting the Eagles up 8-6 when the first timeout came just inside of 16 minutes.

Husson stretched the lead after the timeout, adding a Luis Medina 3, a deep floater from McMorrin, and Jones completed an unconventional 3 point play, as the Eagles doubled up the Mariners by a score of 18-9 with 13 minutes left. Dostie brought the Mariners into double digits a minute later  with an acrobatic, contested layup, but when Uhrin went 2-2 from the line on the next Eagle possession, the Husson lead was extended back to 9, 20-11.

Campbell tried his best to keep MMA in it, adding a 3 from the top of the key that banked in from the top of the square, helping the Mariners chip away at the lead, getting as close as 5 points. The crowd nearly erupted a minute later as Jones nearly threw down a back-door alley-oop, but Campbell had ahold of his arm, sending Jones to the line, where he nailed both of the shots from the line to go up by six. That was campbell's third foul sending him to the bench. His sub, #23 hit a 3 from the corner bringing the Eagle lead back down to 3, but on the next eagle possession, a McMorrin layup sent husson back up by 5, 26-21.

Campbell went diving into the scorers' table after a loose ball, but his save attempts found its way into Husson's hands, then amidst a crowd of people underneath the basket, Jay Uhrin was fouled on an attempt, and Jones came out of nowhere and slammed it home. While the dunk would not count, the crowd in Newman Gym stayed abuzz until the close of the half. Jones brought the crowd back to their feet with a one-handed slamma-jamma out of an alley oop, sending the Eagles into half time up 48-35.

Jones lead the way in the first half scoring a double-double, adding 16 points and 11 boards in the opening frame. Uhrin was also in the double digits in the scoring column with 13 in the half. MMA was lead by Campbell who tallied 11, and Tyler Pineo was right on his tail with 10 of his own.

Maine Maritime got the ball out of the break, but it took them a whole minute before they got into the scoring column with a Tyler Pinco 3. Luis Medina got on the board first for the Eagles on the next poession, adding a breakaway layup, and a Uhrin pull-up jumper made the Eagle lead 14.

The Mariners mounted a comeback attempt early in the second half, but Jones stopped their momentum with a deep 2 as the shot clock was running down, stretching the waining lead back to double digits. At the 13 minute mark, bodies for both teams were diving on the floor for the ball, but it wound up in the hands of Dostie for a two-handed dunk and the foul, which he added, narrowing the margin down to just 6. With the Mariners down just four, Pinco nailed a 3 from the right wing to bring the game to within a point with about 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Zaharchuk got the ball inside on three straight possessions, adding two lay ups and going 2-3 from the line to bring the Husson lead back to 7. Medina added another lay-up in transition, forcing the Mariners to take a timeout with 9:41 left in the game, trailing once again by 9.

MMA cut the lead down to 5 with a Dylan Meklin layup, but Husson answered back when Jones came in from the foul line to grab the offensive board and slam it back down, making the score 68-61 with five minutes left. Medina added a left-wing 3 to bring the Eagle lead back to double digits. Jones added a 360 baseline lay-in in traffic the next time down the floor to put the eagles up 73-61.

With 2:07 remaining, McMorrin hit his two free throws after being fouled driving to the hole, and Husson lead 78-64. Jay Uhrin fouled out with 1:33 left, sending Ball to the line where he hit both to cut into the Eagle lead. Uhrin finished the game with 18 points.

Husson came up empty on their next possession, but drained the shot clock all the way down before taking a shot. Sam Bell nailed a 3 from the left wing on the next Mariner trip down the floor to get to within 9, with 42 seconds left. Maine Maritime fouled Brad Libby on the inbounds, who hit both from the line. Campbell raced down the court and laid it in, and the Mariners fouled Libby once again, and this time he split from the line, and MMA took the ball down the court with just 28 seconds left. The Mariner 3 would miss the mark, and MMA fouled McMorrin who added what would prove to be the final two points of the game, sending the Eagles out victorious by a score of 83-71.

Jones doubled his double-double, finishing the game with 23 points and 21 boards. On the night, Jones came down with more rebounds than the entire Mariner team. Zaharchuk also added 16 points to the cause and pulled down 6 boards; Medina also finished in double figures with an even 10.

Pineo lead the way for the Mariners in the loss with 18 points, thanks to a 4-6 night from 3-point range, Campbell and Dom drake each saw double digit marks in scoring with 15 and 10 respectively.

Coach Caruso made sure to give Maine Maritime credit for a hard fought game, "They really came out to play tonight, and tested our resolve down the stretch." He went on to talk about how the team fought hard on the boards to secure the win, "We've been working on our rebounding for quite some time now, so it's nice to see that hard work paying off."
